After stray rocket, China tries to target a planetoid before it hits Earth

In an effort to divert the Bennu asteroid, which threatens a potentially catastrophic collision that could end life on earth, Chinese scientists have suggested launching 23 rockets into space in an effort to save humanity.

The Bennu asteroid is an 85.5 million-ton space rock, located 7.5 million kilometers from Earth, and scientists estimate it could hit Earth between 2175 and 2199, according to Al Jazeera Net

The kinetic energy of Bennu’s impact on Earth is estimated at 1,200 megatons, 80,000 times greater than the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima. You should know that the kinetic energy of the space rock that wiped out the dinosaurs was estimated at about 100 million megatons.

** 23 Long March 5 rockets
According to a recent study published June 24 in the Icarus Magazine, researchers at china’s National Space Science Center believe that 23 Long March 5 rockets, each weighing 992 tons, will be enough to derail the Bennu asteroid by an estimated 9,000 kilometers, equivalent to 1.4 times the earth’s radius.

** Hammer Plan
What China’s scientists are proposing in their aforementioned study is similar to a proposal made by NASA. NASA’s plan, known as “Hummer,” provided for a 9-meter-high fleet of spacecraft, with a devastating impact to keep the asteroid off course.

NASA simulations indicate that diverting the asteroid Bennu requires 34-53 strikes from the Hummer spacecraft, which will be launched 10 years before the estimated date of Bennu’s collision with Earth.

China’s Long March 5 rockets are the work of China’s space programme, most deliveries to the Chinese space station have been completed and Chinese sensors have been launched to Mars and the moon.

Many doubts and concerns have been raised about the efficiency of this type of missile in the past, owing to its uncontrolled return to earth. The 22-ton part of the Long March 5 rocket landed on the ground last May burning in the sea near the Arabian Peninsula, and fragments of a rocket of the same type are believed to have landed in May 2020 and crashed over two villages in Ivory Coast.

كويكب “بينو” هو عبارة عن صخرة فضائية تزن 85.5 مليون طن، تقع على مسافة 7.5 ملايين كيلومتر عن الأرض، ويقدر العلماء أنه يمكن أن يصطدم بالأرض في الفترة الزمنية ما بين 2175 و2199، وفق الجزيرة نت.

وتقدر الطاقة الحركية لتأثير بينو على الأرض بـ1200 ميغا طن، وهي أكبر بـ80 ألف مرة من طاقة القنبلة النووية التي ألقيت على هيروشيما. ولك أن تعلم أن الطاقة الحركية للصخرة الفضائية التي قضت على الديناصورات قد قدرت بحوالي 100 مليون ميغا طن.

** 23 صاروخ “لونغ مارش 5”
بحسب الدراسة الحديثة التي نشرت في 24 يونيو الجاري في دورية “إيكاروس”، يرى الباحثون في مركز علوم الفضاء الوطني الصيني أن 23 صاروخا من طراز “لونغ مارش 5” والتي يزن كل منها 992 طنا، ستكون كافية لحرف كويكب بينو عن مساره الحالي بما يقدر بـ 9 آلاف كيلومتر، أي ما يعادل 1.4 مرة من نصف قطر الأرض.

** خطة هامر
وما يقترحه علماء الصين في دراستهم المذكورة آنفا يشبه اقتراحا قدمته وكالة ناسا. وقد نصت خطة ناسا المعروفة اختصارا باسم “هامر”، على إرسال أسطول من المركبات الفضائية يبلغ ارتفاعه 9 أمتار، مع مدامك صدم مدمرة لإبعاد الكويكب عن مساره.

وتشير عمليات المحاكاة التي أجرتها ناسا إلى أن تحويل مسار الكويكب بينو يتطلب 34-53 ضربة من مركبة هامر الفضائية، التي سيتم إطلاقها قبل 10 سنوات من التاريخ المقدر لاصطدام بينو بالأرض.

أما صواريخ “لونغ مارش 5” الصينية فتعتبر حصيلة عمل برنامج الفضاء الصيني، وقد استكملت معظم عمليات التسليم إلى محطة الفضاء الصينية، وأطلقت مجسات صينية إلى المريخ والقمر.

وقد أثيرت شكوك ومخاوف عديدة حول كفاءة هذه النوعية من الصواريخ في الماضي، وذلك بسبب عودتها غير المنضبطة إلى الأرض. حيث سقط الجزء الذي يبلغ وزنه 22 طنا من صاروخ “لونغ مارش 5” على الأرض في مايو الماضي محترقا في البحر بالقرب من شبه الجزيرة العربية، كما يعتقد أن شظايا صاروخ من النوع نفسه قد سقطت في مايو 2020 وتحطمت فوق قريتين في ساحل العاج.
