Qatar’s Cultural Hub in Venice

Qatar is set to leave a lasting mark on the global cultural stage with the construction of a permanent national pavilion in the historic Giardini della Biennale in Venice. This prestigious venue, home to the world’s most celebrated art and architecture exhibitions since 1895, will now feature Qatar alongside an elite group of only 30 nations with permanent pavilions. Notably, Qatar becomes just the third country in the past half-century to secure this honor, following Australia and the Republic of Korea.

This landmark moment follows the Protocol of Cooperation signed in June 2024 between Qatar Museums and the Municipality of Venice, a pact that deepens cultural and socio-economic ties between Qatar, Venice, and Italy.

A Bold Step in Cultural Leadership

H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums and Commissioner of the Qatar Pavilion, expressed the significance of this milestone:
“La Biennale di Venezia is the world’s foremost gathering in art and architecture, and the Giardini is the historic stage where nations showcase their cultural identity. Qatar is honored to take its place in this international assembly, not just as a participant, but as a leading voice in cultural diplomacy. Our pavilion will be an unparalleled platform for showcasing the creative brilliance of our nation and the wider Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia region.”

Echoing this sentiment, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, President of La Biennale di Venezia, reflected on Venice’s historic role as a crossroads of civilizations:
“Venice is the only European city to have carried an Arabic name since the year 1000 CE—‘Bunduqiyyah’—a testament to its centuries-old tradition as a melting pot of languages and cultures. In the same spirit of curiosity and exchange that defines both the city and its Biennale, we welcome Qatar to the Giardini as a powerful global hub of creativity and cross-cultural dialogue.”

An Architectural Statement

The Qatar Pavilion will rise in a prime location within the Giardini, adjacent to the iconic Book Pavilion, making it a centerpiece of the Biennale experience. The pavilion will be activated for the first time in May 2025 during the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, introducing an ambitious installation titled Community Centre, crafted by acclaimed Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari.

This installation will form part of the wider exhibition Beyti Beytak. My home is your home. La mia casa è la tua casa., a conceptual exploration of hospitality and architectural traditions across the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA). The exhibition will unravel the ways in which built environments reflect the essence of welcome, community, and shared human experience—themes deeply ingrained in the architectural heritage of the MENASA region.

A Tribute to Visionary Architects

The Qatar Pavilion will honor the legacies of pioneering minds in architecture while also amplifying the voices of contemporary innovators. The exhibition will feature the work of over 20 architects, including several whose contributions have never before been showcased in Venice. Among the luminaries featured:

  • Abeer Seikaly (Jordan) – Fusing architecture with cultural narratives

Shaping the Future of Cultural Exchange

This ambitious exhibition is commissioned by H E Sheikha Al Mayassa and Qatar Museums and organized by the future Art Mill Museum. It is curated by Aurélien Lemonier, Sean Anderson, and Virgile Alexandre, whose combined expertise ensures a thought-provoking presentation of architecture as a cultural and humanistic force.

As Qatar cements its place on the global arts and architecture scene, its new pavilion in Venice stands as a symbol of openness, creativity, and dialogue—a space where traditions meet innovation, and where the future of architecture takes shape.

تخطو دولة قطر خطوةً تاريخية على الساحة الثقافية العالمية بإنشاء جناح وطني دائم في جارديني ديلا بينالي، أحد أعرق المواقع الفنية في العالم، الذي يستضيف المعارض الفنية والهندسية المعمارية منذ 1895. بهذا الإنجاز، تنضم قطر إلى نخبة من 30 دولة فقط تمتلك أجنحة دائمة في البينالي، لتصبح ثالث دولة خلال آخر 50 عامًا تحظى بهذا الامتياز، بعد أستراليا وكوريا الجنوبية.

يأتي هذا المشروع عقب توقيع بروتوكول تعاون في يونيو 2024 بين متاحف قطر وبلدية البندقية، بهدف تعزيز الروابط الثقافية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية بين قطر والبندقية وإيطاليا.

قيادة ثقافية عالمية

أكدت سعادة الشيخة المياسة بنت حمد بن خليفة آل ثاني، رئيسة مجلس أمناء متاحف قطر والمفوضة العامة لجناح قطر:

“يُعد بينالي البندقية الملتقى الأبرز عالميًا في مجالي الفن والهندسة المعمارية، وجارديني هو المنصة التاريخية التي تُجسد الهويات الثقافية للأمم. يسعدنا أن يكون لقطر صوتٌ في هذا التجمع العالمي، ليس فقط كعضو مشارك، بل كقوة رائدة في الدبلوماسية الثقافية. سيمنح جناحنا مساحةً غير مسبوقة للمواهب الإبداعية في قطر والمنطقة الأوسع للشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وجنوب آسيا.”

معلم معماري جديد في قلب البندقية

سيتمركز الجناح القطري في موقع استراتيجي داخل جارديني، بالقرب من جناح الكتاب، حيث سيتم تفعيله لأول مرة في مايو 2025 خلال المعرض الدولي الـ19 للهندسة المعمارية، عبر عرض تركيبي مميز بعنوان “المركز المجتمعي” للمهندسة الباكستانية ياسمين لاري.

يأتي هذا العمل ضمن معرض “بيتي بيتك. منزلي هو منزلك. لا ميا كازا إ لا توا كازا.” الذي يستكشف مفاهيم الضيافة والتقاليد الثقافية في العمارة المعاصرة في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال إفريقيا وجنوب آسيا (MENASA).

تحية لروّاد الهندسة المعمارية

سيضم المعرض أعمال أكثر من 20 مهندسًا معماريًا، من بينهم أسماء لم يسبق لها العرض في البندقية. ومن بينهم:

نحو آفاق جديدة في التبادل الثقافي

بتكليف من متاحف قطر، وتنظيم متحف “آرت ميل” المستقبلي، يأتي هذا المعرض ليضع قطر في صدارة المشهد الثقافي العالمي، ويعكس التزامها ببناء جسور التواصل الثقافي والإبداعي على مستوى العالم.
