Cholera Outbreak Kills 325 in Nigeria

Abuja: An outbreak of Cholera has killed 325 people in 15 states and the capital of Nigeria between January and June of this year.

In an update of the Cholera outbreak in Nigeria, the health agency said a total of 14,343 suspected cases of cholera were reported from 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the period, with 325 deaths, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) said in a report.

About 27% of suspected cases across the country are those in the 5-14 years bracket, according to the report.

The outbreak is frequently reported in Nigeria due to the lack of potable water supply, especially in densely populated areas.

The health agency added that it has been supporting states to ensure a coordinated, rapid and effective response to the current outbreak, including deployment of rapid response teams to support the response at the state level, provision of medical and laboratory supplies, and scale-up of risk communications amongst other activities.

وذكر المركز الوطني لمكافحة الأمراض، في بيان، أن جميع الوفيات سجلت في 15 ولاية في البلاد (من أصل 36 ولاية)، وكذلك بالعاصمة أبوجا، مضيفا أنه تم تسجيل 14 ألفا و343 حالة إصابة بالكوليرا خلال الأشهر الستة الأولى من العام الجاري، ومشيرا إلى أن الفئة العمرية (5-14 سنة) مثلت 27 في المئة من إجمالي عدد الإصابات.

وأكد المركز أن السلطات تواصل جهودها لمكافحة مرض الكوليرا الذي يعود أحد أسباب تفشيه في نيجيريا، كما هو حال عدد كبير من الدول الإفريقية، إلى حرمان جزء كبير من سكانها من الوصول المستقر إلى المياه الصالحة للشرب.

تجدر الإشارة إلى أن هناك كثيرا من العوامل التي تؤدي لزيادة أعداد الأمراض الوبائية، والوفيات الناجمة عنها في نيجيريا، ومنها نقص المياه النظيفة، وعدم التدخل الطبي في الوقت المناسب بشكل مؤثر وفعال.
