A submerged continent under Iceland .. Will we witness a re-drawing of maps soon?

Academics believe they have discovered a fascinating geological secret: a sunken continent hidden under Iceland, which they named Icelandia.
An international team of geologists, led by Gillian Folger, emeritus professor of geophysics in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Durham in the UK, suggests that the sunken continent could extend from Greenland to Europe, according to CNN.
The continent is believed to cover an area of approximately 600,000 square kilometres, but when the neighbouring areas of western Britain are included in Greater Iceland, a Durham University statement indicated that the entire region could reach nearly 1 million square kilometres.
If proven, it would mean that the giant continent of Pangea, believed to have disintegrated more than 50 million years ago, has not completely disintegrated.
The statement stated that this new theory challenges ancient scientific ideas about the extent of the oceanic and continental crust in the North Atlantic region and how volcanic islands, such as Iceland, were formed.
The presence of the continental crust, rather than the oceanic, may lead to the thinking of a new source of minerals and hydrocarbons, both of which are present in the continental crust.
This new revolutionary theory was included in a dedicated chapter of The Footsteps of Warren B. Hamilton: New Ideas in Earth Science published by the American Geological Society on June 29.
Speaking about the new theory, Folger said: “So far, geologists have puzzled Iceland because existing theories that it is composed of oceanic crust, and is surrounded by it, are not supported by multiple geological data.”
For example, the crust below Iceland is more than 40 kilometres thicker and seven times thicker than the normal oceanic crust.
The research team is now working with collaborators from all over the world to test its theory, which will begin as soon as the Covid-19 restrictions allow it.
In the future, we will likely see the oceans and seas remapped as our perceptions of what lies beneath the earth change.

ويعمل فريق البحث الآن مع متعاونين من جميع أنحاء العالم لاختبار نظريته، وهو أمر سيبدأ بمجرد أن تسمح قيود فيروس كورونا = “كوفيد-19” بذلك.
وفي المستقبل، من المحتمل أننا سنشهد إعادة رسم خرائط المحيطات والبحار مع تغير ما ندركه عمّا يكمن تحت الأرض.
