UNICEF: More Than 2 Million in Niger Face Humanitarian Crisis

New York: The UN Children’s Fund is urging the international community to pay more attention to Niger, where more than 2 million people are malnourished and living in dire conditions.
More than 3.8 million people in Niger, more than half children, are facing a humanitarian crisis because of a combination of natural and human-caused disasters.
UNICEF Friday released a report calling for increased attention and mobilization to the plight of those children and families who “suffer in silence.”
“Considering the dramatic increase in the number of people affected by the multiple, prolonged and complex emergencies in the country, it is a challenge to the government and to the humanitarian community to meet their needs”, said UNICEF Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Marie-Pierre Poirier.
“Children’s lives have been torn apart. It is hard to believe that children should live in permanent fear of such attacks. This doesn’t have to be their reality” she warned. “The protection of childrens rights, including children in displacement is fundamental, be it the right to food, health, education, water or the right to be protected from violence. They need shelter, food, drinking water, medical care and education”.
The sharp increase in insecurity and movement restrictions consequently imposed by the Government have hampered humanitarian actors’ access to populations affected by conflict. UNICEF calls on all stakeholders to respect humanitarian spaces allowing safe and sustainable access to deliver humanitarian assistance to affected populations, including women and children, wherever they are.
In 2021, UNICEF and its partners will need $102.2 million to deliver vital humanitarian aid to children throughout the country.
“NICEF appeals for solidarity to help the Government and its partners provide vital assistance to affected populations and improve their living conditions,” Poirier said.

نيويورك: دعت منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة /اليونيسف/ المجتمع الدولي إلى مزيد الاهتمام بحوالي 2.1 مليون طفل في النيجر عالقين في الأزمة الإنسانية التي تعصف بالبلاد، حاثة إياه على حشد الدعم السريع لهؤلاء الأطفال وأسرهم.
وأوضحت المنظمة، في بيان، أن الصراع والنزوح وانعدام الأمن الغذائي وسوء التغذية والأوبئة المتكررة وتفشي الأمراض والفيضانات الدورية وحالات الجفاف في النيجر، أدت إلى جعل أكثر من 3.8 ملايين شخص، بما في ذلك 2.1 مليون طفل، في حاجة ماسة إلى المساعدة الإنسانية، بزيادة قدرها 30 في المئة مقارنة بالعام الماضي.
وفي تعقيب على هذا البيان، أفادت السيدة ماري بيير بوراييه المديرة الإقليمية لـ (ليونيسف) لغرب ووسط أفريقيا، في تصريحات، بأنه نظرا إلى الزيادة الهائلة في عدد الأشخاص المتضررين من حالات الطوارئ المتعددة والطويلة والمعقدة في هذا البلد، فإن تلبية احتياجاتهم تمثل تحديا بالنسبة للحكومة والمجتمع الإنساني، مشير ة إلى أن انعدام الأمن ينتشر بوتيرة سريعة في النيجر.
من جهته، ذكر السيد أبو بكري تال، ممثل /اليونيسف/ بالنيابة في النيجر، أن البلاد تواجه أزمة كبيرة بسبب تجدد النزاع المسلح، والنزوح، وسوء التغذية، والأوبئة، والكوارث المتعلقة بالمناخ، فضلا عن الآثار الاجتماعية والاقتصادية لجائحة كورونا /كوفيد-19/.
جدير بالذكر أن منظمة /اليونيسيف/ كانت قد أطلقت خلال الأشهر الأخيرة نداءات عاجلة لتوفير تمويلات ضرورية لمساعدة أعداد كبيرة من سكان النيجر، بينهم أكثر من مليوني طفل، على تجاوز تداعيات الجفاف ونقص الأغذية.
