Herd of elephants Spreads terror in China’s streets

Euronews posted a video of a herd of elephants in China, marching hundreds of kilometers and entering populated areas escaping from a sanctuary in the southwest of the country.

According to the European website, the herd of 15 elephants travelled 500 kilometres from a nature reserve in southwestern China, and information on the real reason why the herd left the reserve remained unknown until now.

According to local Chinese television channels, the herd left the Xishuangbanna reserve on the border with Laos and Myanmar, before heading north in mid-April.

The elephants, including three young elephants, had crossed hundreds of kilometres and reached populated areas, causing terror and panic among the population, the elephants emptied a water tank and grain crops on a farm.

Chinese state television reported Monday morning that elephants were still in the rural suburbs.

Rainfall and low temperatures prevented elephants from moving away and confined them to a small area in Xiyang town in Jining district, It added.

Stray elephants have destroyed about 56 hectares of agricultural land, and the damage they caused during their migration is estimated at 6.8 million yuan ($1.1 million)

According to state-funded CCTV, relevant authorities in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, tried to cut off elephants by using traffic trucks

“We’re here to stop the elephants,” a truck driver told CCTV.

“The herd was walking around the village all day,” said one villager, “we went out and saw a three-metre-high elephant. We were scared”.

CCTV added that an adult elephant left the herd on Sunday afternoon and went north-east to an area 1.5 kilometres from the rest of his companions, and has not yet returned.

The elephants’ departure prompted local authorities to re-examine the herd’s potential travel routes and update contingency plans.

Elephants are monitored by local authorities through a task force of hundreds of people, vehicles and dozens of drones.

Photographs and video footage show elephants wandering through farmland and villages.

وذكر الموقع الأوروبي أن القطيع مؤلف من 15 فيلا قطع مسافة 500 كيلومتراً قادماً من محمية طبيعية بجنوب غرب الصين، ولا تزال المعلومات حول السبب الحقيقي الذي دفع القطيع إلى مغادرة المحمية مجهولة حتى هذه الأثناء.

وبحسب قنوات التلفزيون الصينية المحلية، ترك القطيع محمية “شيشوانغبانا” على الحدود مع لاوس وميانمار، قبل التوجه نحو الشمال في منتصف أبريل.

واجتازت الفيلة وبينها ثلاثة صغار منذ أيام مئات الكيلومترات ووصلت إلى مناطق مأهولة بالسكان مما بث الرعب والذعر في نفوس الأهالي، وأفرغت الفيلة خزان مياه ومحاصيل حبوب في إحدى المزارع.

وذكر التلفزيون الرسمي الصيني، صباح الإثنين، أن الفيلة ما زالت في الضاحية الريفية.

وأضاف أن هطول الأمطار ودرجات الحرارة المنخفضة أدت إلى منع الأفيال من التحرك بعيداً وحصرها في منطقة صغيرة في بلدة شييانغ في منطقة جينينغ.

وقضت الفيلة الشاردة على حوالي 56 هكتاراً من المساحات الزراعية، وتقدر قيمة الأضرار التي ألحقتها خلال هجرتها بنحو 6.8 مليون يوان (1.1 مليون دولار).

وبحسب التلفزيون المركزي الحكومي “سي سي تي في”، حاولت السلطات المعنية في مدينة كونمينغ عاصمة مقاطعة يونان قطع الطريق أمام الفيلة من خلال الاستعانة بشاحنات مرورية.

وقال سائق شاحنة لشبكة CCTV “نحن هنا لصد الفيلة”.

وقال أحد القرويين “كان القطيع يتجول في القرية طوال اليوم”، “خرجنا ورأينا فيلاً يبلغ ارتفاعه ثلاثة أمتار. شعرنا بالخوف”.

وأضاف التلفزيون أن فيلاً بالغاً غادر القطيع بعد ظهر الأحد وتوجه صوب الشمال الشرقي إلى منطقة تبعد 1.5 كيلومتر عن بقية رفاقه، ولم يعد حتى الآن.

ورحيل الفيلة دفع السلطات المحلية إلى إعادة دراسة طرق السفر المحتملة للقطيع وتحديث خطط الطوارئ.

وتراقب السلطات المحلية الأفيال من خلال فرقة عمل مكونة من مئات الأشخاص والمركبات وعشرات الطائرات بدون طيار.

وتظهر الصور والتسجيلات المصورة الأفيال وهي تتجول في الأراضي الزراعية والقرى.
