US President Asks Intelligence Agencies to Step up Probe of COVID-19’s Origins

Washington: US President Joe Biden said Wednesday he has asked the intelligence community to report within 90 days on the likely origins of COVID-19.

As questions grow about whether the virus was the result of an accident in a Chinese laboratory or spread through other means, Biden said in a statement he wants the community, which has been divided over the issue, to “redouble” their investigative efforts.

As of today, the U.S. Intelligence Community has “coalesced around two likely scenarios,” according to Biden’s statement.

While two elements of the community lean toward the likelihood that the virus emerged from human contact with an infected animal, one leans toward the possibility of a laboratory accident. Their assessments are made “with low or moderate confidence.” and the majority of members of the intelligence community “do not believe there is sufficient information to assess one to be more likely than the other.”

Bidens directive comes a day after Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra told the World Health Organization that international experts must be able to independently assess the source of the virus.

وقال بايدن في بيان اليوم، لا توجد أدلة كافية لاستنتاج “ما إذا كان (الفيروس) ناتجا عن ملامسة الإنسان لحيوان مصاب أو من حادث مختبري” ، موجها المختبرات الأمريكية للمساعدة في التحقيق.

ودعا الرئيس الأمريكي الحكومة الصينية إلى التعاون مع التحقيقات الدولية المتعلقة بأصل الوباء، مشيرا إلى احتمال عدم التوصل للنتائج النهائية على الإطلاق، نتيجة رفض الصين التعاون الكامل مع التحقيقات الدولية.

وقد عادت فرضية تسرب الفيروس من مختبر صيني بقوة إلى الواجهة في الأيام الأخيرة في الولايات المتحدة بعد نشر تقرير لصحيفة “وول ستريت جورنال”، حيث أسندت الصحيفة إلى تقرير استخباراتي أمريكي أنه تم نقل ثلاثة باحثين من المختبر الصيني إلى المستشفى مع “أعراض مشابهة” لكوفيد في نوفمبر 2019 – أي قبل شهر من الظهور الرسمي للمرض حسب بكين.

وتم رصد الحالات الأولى لـ/كوفيد-19 / نهاية 2019 في مدينة يوهان الصينية قبل أن ينتشر الفيروس في جميع أنحاء العالم ويقتل ما يقارب 3,5 مليون شخص حتى الآن.
