China Labour Day travel rush gives glimpse of pre-Covid life

Beijing: Millions of travellers criss-crossed China as the Labour Day holiday got underway Saturday, packing out tourist sites, thronging restaurants and visiting family as the vast country edges towards life after Covid.
The world’s second largest economy is expecting some 265 million journeys by road, train or boat during the five-day holiday, a transport ministry official said this week — numbers last seen in 2019 before the coronavirus struck.
Hundreds of day trippers packed out the walkway along the top of the Great Wall at Badaling, some 60 kilometres (37 miles) from downtown Beijing, with many not wearing masks.
Ahead of the holiday on Friday, passengers thronged train stations across the country, with queues stretching across crowded departure halls.
Although China’s economy has bounced back from the coronavirus-induced slowdown of last year, consumer activity has lagged behind the stronger rebound seen in the industrial production.
But retail sales have since picked up, surging 34.2 percent on-year in March and painting a more optimistic picture of consumption demand.
Key cities such as capital city Beijing, as well as Shanghai and Guangzhou, are expected to see greater demand this Labour Day holiday, said the transport official Li Huaqiang.

وقال مسؤول في وزارة النقل هذا الأسبوع إن ثاني أكبر اقتصاد في العالم يتوقع نحو 265 مليون رحلة برية أو بحرية خلال العطلة التي تستمر خمسة أيام — وهي أرقام سجّلت آخر مرة عام 2019 قبل انتشار الفيروس.
واحتشد مئات من المتنزهين على طول الجزء العلوي من سور الصين العظيم في بادالينغ على بعد حوالى 60 كيلومترا وسط العاصمة بكين من دون وضع العديد منهم كمامات.
وقبيل عطلة الجمعة، احتشد الركاب في محطات القطارات في جميع أنحاء البلاد، وامتدت الطوابير عبر صالات المغادرة المزدحمة.
وعلى الرغم من أن الاقتصاد الصيني حقق انتعاشا بعد التباطؤ الناجم عن فيروس كورونا في العام الماضي، إلا أن النشاط الاستهلاكي لم يحقق انتعاشا كما الإنتاج الصناعي.
لكن مبيعات التجزئة انتعشت منذ ذلك الحين، اذ قفزت بنسبة 34,2 في المئة على أساس سنوي في آذار/مارس، لتعكس صورة أكثر تفاؤلا للطلب الاستهلاكي.
وقال مسؤول النقل لي هوا تشيانغ إنه يتوقع أن تشهد المدن الرئيسية مثل بكين، وكذلك شنغهاي وغوانزو، إقبالا أكبر خلال عطلة عيد العمال.
