Doha: Turning date pits into fuel for cars. This is not a joke but a result of an international research team, in which Egyptian Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, a researcher at The University of Queens in the United Kingdom, participated and found a way to produce biodiesel from the waste of the date industry.
According to Al Jazeera Net, the team’s study, which will be published in the June issue of Renewable Energy, has led to the conversion of the remaining date pits oil as waste from the date industry into biodiesel. The researchers succeeded in designing and improving a biodiesel production program.
“The study in the research is technical and environmental, and we are working to apply it effectively on the ground,” Dr Ibrahim said in response to a question to Al Jazeera Net via social media about the economic assessment of biodiesel production in the new way compared to what is currently available.
The researcher added that the problem facing the production of biofuels and its current high cost is that the catalyst is very expensive, used a few times, and then replaced.
Commenting on the challenge of declining global interest in biofuels, as the world is invaded by electric cars, which are an acceptable alternative to overcoming fossil fuel problems, Dr. Ibrahim said that “So far, 90% of the electricity production used in electricity cars is resulted from burning coal and fossil fuels, so the problem persists.”
“The problem with biofuels now is that the technology used in it is very expensive and therefore has no preference. But the future promises for its use vigorously if new and cheap technology is adjusted. That’s what we’re working on now.”
Date pit is a brown-colored solid body occupying the center of the fruit that has a rectangular shape and pointy ends, and has many names in different regions, and the seed represents the uneaten part, ranging from 4 to 20% of the total weight of the fruit according to kind, and may be affected by the source of pollen and agricultural processes.
الدوحة: تحويل نوى التمر إلى وقود للسيارات.. هذا ليس مزحة وإنما نتيجة توصل إليها فريق بحثي دولي، شارك فيه المصري الدكتور أحمد إبراهيم الباحث بجامعة “كوينز” بالمملكة المتحدة، وتوصل إلى طريقة لإنتاج الديزل الحيوي من مخلفات نفايات صناعة التمر.
ووفق موقع “الجزيرة نت”، سلطت دراسة الفريق – التي ستنشر في دورية “رينيوبال إنيرجي”، في عدد يونيو القادم- على تحويل زيت نوى التمر المتبقي كنفايات من صناعة التمور إلى وقود الديزل الحيوي.
ونجح الباحثون في تصميم برنامج لإنتاج وقود الديزل الحيوي وتحسينه.
وفي سؤال للجزيرة نت عبر وسائل التواصل حول التقييم الاقتصادي لإنتاج الديزل الحيوي بالطريقة الجديدة مقارنة بالمتاح حاليا، أفاد الدكتور إبراهيم بأن “الدراسة الموجودة في البحث تقنية وبيئية، ونعمل الآن على تطبيقها فعليا على أرض الواقع”.
وأضاف الباحث أن المشكلة التي تواجه إنتاج الوقود الحيوي وغلاء تكلفته حاليا هي أن العامل المحفز غال للغاية، ويستخدم مرات قليلة، ويتم بعد ذلك استبداله.
وتعليقا على تحدي تراجع الاهتمام عالميا بموضوع الوقود الحيوي، في الوقت الذي تغزو فيه العالم السيارات الكهربائية، والتي تعتبر بديلا مقبولا للتغلب على مشاكل الوقود الأحفوري، أفاد الدكتور إبراهيم بأنه “حتى الآن فإن 90% من إنتاج الكهرباء المستخدمة في سيارات الكهرباء ناتج عن حرق الفحم والوقود الأحفوري، ومن ثم فإن المشكلة مازلت قائمة”.
واختتم تصريحاته بالقول “مشكلة الوقود الحيوي الآن أن التكنولوجيا المستخدمة فيه غالية الثمن جدا، وبالتالي ليس له الأفضلية. ولكن المستقبل يبشر باستخدامه وبقوة في حال ضبط تكنولوجيا جديدة ورخيصة.. وهذا ما نعمل عليه الآن”.
ونوى التمر، جسم صلب يحتل وسط الثمرة، وشكلها مستطيل مدببة الطرفين بنيّة اللون، ولها أسماء عديدة تختلف باختلاف المناطق، والبذرة تمثل الجزء غير المأكول، وتتراوح نسبتها بين 4 و20% من إجمالي وزن الثمرة حسب الصنف، وقد تتأثر هذه النسبة بمصدر حبوب اللقاح والعمليات الزراعية.
