WHO reports first decrease in number of Coronavirus cases since September

GENEVA: The World Health Organization said that last week witnessed the first decrease since last September in the reported cases of Coronavirus in the world, due to the decrease in the number of cases in Europe in particular.
The organization attributed the decrease in the number of people with Covid-19 in Europe, to the effectiveness of the “difficult and necessary” measures taken in recent weeks.
Mr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, welcomed the news at a regular press conference today, but added: “We explain this with great caution, as gains can easily be lost, and there is still an increase in the number of cases in most other regions of the world, and an increase in death rates.”
Ghebreyesus pointed out the need not to expose oneself or others to danger because of the desire to spend time with family and friends, considering that “the pandemic will end and we all have a role in ending it.”
Earlier in the day, the director of the organization pledged to take all required steps to reveal the source of the virus that caused the epidemic, rejecting the UN agency’s accusation that it was too lenient with China.
“We want to know the source, and we will do everything possible to find out about it”, he said, noting that the organization hopes to quickly send a scientific team to China.
Coronavirus has caused the death of one million and 460 thousand and 18 people in the world since the WHO office in China reported the emergence of the disease at the end of last December, and infected more than 62 million and 732 thousand and 520 people in the world since that date.
The virus killed / 266,887 / people in the United States, / 172,833 / in Brazil, / 137,139 / in India, / 105,655 / in Mexico and / 58,245 / in Britain.

جنيف: قالت منظمة الصحة العالمية، إن الأسبوع الماضي شهد أول انخفاض، منذ شهر سبتمبر الماضي، في الإصابات المبلغ عنها بمرض كورونا /كوفيد – 19/ في العالم، وذلك بسبب تراجع عدد الحالات في أوروبا على وجه الخصوص.
وعزت المنظمة، انخفاض أعداد المصابين بمرض /كـوفيد – 19/ في أوروبا، إلى فعالية الإجراءات “الصعبة والضرورية” التي اتخذت في الأسابيع الأخيرة.
ورحب السيد تيدروس أدهانوم غيبرييسوس مدير عام المنظمة في مؤتمر صحفي دوري، اليوم، بتلك الأنباء، لكنه أضاف: “نفسر ذلك بحذر شديد، إذ يمكن بسهولة خسارة المكاسب، ولا تزال هناك زيادة في عدد الحالات في معظم مناطق العالم الأخرى، وزيادة في الوفيات”.
وأشار غيبرييسوس إلى ضرورة عدم تعريض النفس أو الغير للخطر بسبب الرغبة في قضاء الوقت مع الأسرة والأصدقاء، معتبرا أن “جائحة /كوفيد – 19/ ستنتهي وعلينا جميعا دور في إنهائها”.
وفي وقت سابق اليوم، تعهد مدير المنظمة، بالقيام بكل الخطوات المطلوبة لكشف مصدر الفيروس الذي تسبب بالوباء، رافضا اتهام الوكالة الأممية بأنها تساهلت للغاية مع الصين.
وقال “نريد أن نعرف المصدر، وسنبذل كل ما هو ممكن لمعرفته”، علما أن المنظمة تأمل في إرسال فريق علمي سريعا إلى الصين”.
وتسبب فيروس كورونا في وفاة مليون و460 ألفا و18 في العالم منذ أن أبلغ مكتب منظمة الصحة العالمية في الصين عن ظهور المرض نهاية ديسمبر الماضي، وإصابة أكثر من 62 مليونا و732 ألفا و520 شخصا في العالم منذ ذلك التاريخ.
