Cryptocurrencies threaten Europe’s financial system

Frankfurt: A member of the European Central Bank’s board of directors Fabio Panetta warned last Friday that the cryptocurrencies that global tech giants such as Facebook intend to issue could undermine the European financial system. “Big tech companies could pose significant risks from an economic and social perspective and might restrict consumer choices instead of expanding it,” said Panetta.
He added that while these companies “can provide appropriate and effective payment solutions … they also carry the risk of threatening competition, privacy, financial stability and even monetary sovereignty.”
Panetta’s warning comes at a time when the Covid-19 epidemic is accelerating the shift towards electronic payment and abandonment of banknotes, something that the European Central Bank administration is likely to continue even after the end of the health crisis. Facebook is considering launching its own cryptocurrency, which it calls “Libra” under the pretext of reducing costs. Consumers around the world need to get rid of high fees to make cross-border transfers. However, the plan has sparked widespread controversy and worries regulators around the world about a privately managed currency. Panetta indicated that the money may become available in exchange for a subscription fee to a platform.

فرانكفورت: حذّر عضو في مجلس إدارة البنك المركزي الأوروبي الجمعة من أن العملات المشفّرة التي تنوي شركات تكنولوجيا عالمية عملاقة على غرار فيسبوك إصدارها قد تقوّض المنظومة المالية الأوروبية.وقال فابيو بانيتا إن «شركات التكنولوجيا الكبرى قد تشكّل مخاطر كبيرة من المنظور الاقتصادي والاجتماعي وقد تقيّد خيارات المستهلكين بدلًا من توسيعها».
وأضاف أنه بينما يمكن لهذه الشركات أن «توفر حلولًا للدفع مناسبة وفعالة… إلا أنها تحمل في الوقت ذاته خطر تهديد المنافسة والخصوصية والاستقرار المالي وحتى السيادة النقدية». ويأتي تحذير بانيتا في وقت يسرّع وباء كوفيد-19 التحوّل باتجاه الدفع إلكترونيًا والتخلي عن الأوراق النقدية، وهو أمر ترجّح إدارة البنك المركزي الأوروبي بأن يتواصل حتى بعد انتهاء الأزمة الصحية.ويدرس فيسبوك إطلاق عملته المشفّرة الخاصة به والتي يطلق عليها «ليبرا» بحجة خفض التكاليف على المستهلكين حول العالم من خلال تخليصهم من الرسوم العالية لإجراء تحويلات عبر الحدود.لكن الخطة أثارت جدلًا واسعًا وتثير قلق جهات منظّمة حول العالم حيال عملة تدار بشكل خاص.وأشار بانيتا إلى أن الأموال قد تصبح متوفرة مقابل رسوم اشتراك في منصة ما.
