UK Allocates Additional 3 Billion Pounds to Health Sector to Confront Coronavirus

London: Britain has announced that it will allocate an additional 3 billion pounds to the National Health Service (NHS) budget to help it deal with the repercussions of the second wave of the Coronavirus epidemic (Covid-19).

In an interview with the Sunday Times newspaper, Rishi Sunak, the British Secretary of the Treasury, said that the additional budget will contribute to reducing the number of waiting cases among patients who need surgery, after the Coronavirus pandemic caused their procedure to be postponed.

The number of patients who need surgery increased from 1,500 last February to 140,000 last September, which will constitute a great burden on the National Health Service (NHS) hospitals.

Sunak warned of the size of the “economic shock” in the coming months, adding, that they see economic data every month, and the size of the shock that their economy is currently facing is very large.

The British Treasury Secretary hinted to the possibility of increasing taxes starting next year, as well as implementing cuts in the volume of government spending on a number of sectors, once they overcome the crisis and identify the best ways to restore stability to public finances.

Sunak stressed that the pace of government borrowing, which recorded 22.3 billion pounds last month, cannot continue in the same manner, especially with the size of the public debt reaching more than 2 trillion pounds.

لندن: أعلنت بريطانيا أنها ستخصص 3 مليارات جنيه إسترليني إضافية لميزانية وزارة الصحة لمساعدتها على التعامل مع تداعيات الموجة الثانية من تفشي وباء كورونا (كوفيد-19) .

وأوضح السيد ريشي سوناك وزير الخزانة البريطاني ،في حديث لصحيفة /صنداي تايمز/، أن الميزانية الإضافية ستساهم في خفض عدد حالات الانتظار بين المرضى الذين يحتاجون لعمليات جراحية، بعد أن تسببت جائحة كورونا في تأجيل إجرائها.

وارتفع عدد المرضى الذين بحاجة لعمليات جراحية من 1500 حالة في فبراير الماضي إلى 140 ألف حالة في سبتمبر الماضي، الأمر الذي سيشكل عبئا كبيرا على مستشفيات هيئة الصحة الوطنية.

وحذر سوناك من حجم الصدمة الاقتصادية في الأشهر المقبلة، مضيفا “نحن نرى البيانات الاقتصادية كل شهر، وحجم الصدمة التي يواجهها اقتصادنا حاليا كبير للغاية”.

وألمح وزير الخزانة البريطاني إلى احتمال زيادة الضرائب بدءا من العام المقبل، فضلا عن تنفيذ اقتطاعات في حجم الإنفاق الحكومي على عدد من القطاعات “وذلك بمجرد تخطينا للأزمة وتحديد أفضل السبل لاستعادة الاستقرار للمالية العامة”.

وأكد سوناك أن وتيرة الاقتراض الحكومي، الذي سجل 22.3 مليار جنيه إسترليني الشهر الماضي، لا يمكن أن تستمر على نفس المنوال، خاصة مع بلوغ حجم الدين العام أكثر من 2 تريليون جنيه.

وكشفت هيئة الإحصاءات الوطنية أن الاقتراض الحكومي بلغ حتى الآن نحو 215 مليار جنيه إسترليني، وهو ما يزيد بنحو 169 مليار جنيه عن العام الماضي، مع توقعات ببلوغه مستوى يزيد عن 372 مليار جنيه بنهاية العام المالي الجاري في مارس المقبل.
