Doha: Is it possible to get re-infected by the novel coronavirus? Highly unlikely according to studies conducted in Qatar, said Dr. Hamad Eid Al Romaihi, the Head of Surveillance and Outbreak Control, Supreme Council of Health of Qatar.
The chances of getting infected twice from the virus are four in 10,000, he said.
“The percentage is very small,” he told Al Rayyan TV in an interview aired on Monday.
While scientists have been working on many fronts to understand the virus and develop vaccines for it, there’s still not enough data to conclusively determine how long the immunity from these vaccines lasts.
Knowing how long immunity lasts is important in creating vaccination protocols.
Drugmaker Moderna on Monday said its coronavirus vaccine was 94.5 percent effective, joining Pfizer as a front-runner in the global race to contain a raging pandemic that has killed 1.2 million people worldwide.
Both the companies plan to apply within weeks to the US Food and Drug Administration for emergency authorization to begin vaccinating the public.
Dr Romaihi said the duration of immunity that these vaccinations provide to a person is not known with any certainty.
