London: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering imposing a new month-long national lockdown in England next week after scientists said COVID-19 was spreading faster than their worst predictions.
A new “stay at home” order could be announced on Monday, with schools, colleges and universities exempt, according to BBC.
Documents seen by the BBC suggest the UK is on course for a much higher death toll than during the first wave unless further restrictions are introduced, deaths could reach more than 4,000 a day, compared to about 1000 deaths during the first wave.
According to these documents, the statistical models of the outbreak of the pandemic expect that hospitals will be filled with people infected with the virus by mid-December, and the number of deaths will reach its peak by the end of December.
The document warns that south-west England and the Midlands will be the first to run out of capacity, potentially within a fortnight.
Scientists advising the government have been arguing for a short, planned lockdown – called a “circuit-breaker”, however, the government preferred to imposing a local lockdown according to the rate of the outbreak in each region separately.
The government for each of Britain’s four territories – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – has different policies in dealing with the outbreak.
It is worth noting that the number of cases in Britain reached 992,874, while 46,319 deaths were recorded since the outbreak of the disease last March.

وذكرت هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية /بي بي سي/ أن الحكومة قد تصدر بعد غد /الاثنين/ أوامر لسكان إنجلترا بالبقاء في منازلهم وعدم مغادرتها إلا للضرورة، مع الإبقاء على المدارس والجامعات مفتوحة.
وذكرت الهيئة أنها اطلعت على وثائق تم عرضها على رئيس الوزراء تشير إلى أن بريطانيا بجميع أقاليمها في طريقها لتسجيل نسبة وفيات أعلى بكثير من تلك التي شهدتها الموجة الأولى لتفشي الوباء في مارس الماضي، ذلك أن عدد حالات الوفاة قد يبلغ 4 آلاف حالة يوميا، مقارنة بنحو ألف وفاة خلال الموجة الأولى.
ووفقا لهذه الوثائق فإن النماذج الإحصائية لتفشي الوباء تتوقع امتلاء المستشفيات بالمصابين بالفيروس بحلول منتصف شهر ديسمبر، وبلوغ عدد الوفيات ذروته بنهاية ديسمبر قبل أن تبدأ هذه الموجة في الانكسار ابتداء من مطلع شهر يناير.
وتوقعت الوثائق أن تكون مناطق جنوب غرب ووسط إنجلترا أول المناطق التي ستنفد فيها الأسرة بالمستشفيات نظرا لتكدسها بالمصابين.
وطالب عدد من العلماء في الفترة الأخيرة بضرورة فرض حالة إغلاق عام قصيرة المدى لكسر الموجة الثانية من تفشي الوباء، إلا أن الحكومة فضلت اللجوء إلى فرض حالة إغلاق محلي وفقا لنسبة تفشي الوباء في كل منطقة على حدة.
وتتبع الحكومة المحلية لكل إقليم من أقاليم بريطانيا الأربعة – إنجلترا وإسكتلندا وويلز وأيرلندا الشمالية – سياسات مختلفة في التعامل مع تفشي الفيروس.
جدير بالذكر أن عدد حالات الإصابة في عموم بريطانيا بلغ 992874 حالة، فيما سجلت 46319 حالة وفاة منذ تفشي الوباء في مارس الماضي.
