UNRWA Denies Ending Agency Work Within 8 months

Beirut: The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) today denied reports of ending its work within a period not exceeding eight months.

UNRWA in Lebanon said in a statement reported by the Lebanese National Media Agency, that some social media sites published and circulated a secret meeting that discussed the issue of the extension of the UNRWA extension, and that there is an international desire to dispense with the agency and find an alternative that guarantees Palestinian refugees a fair solution, for their case and setting up a sequential program to start implementing my work to terminate the agency’s work within a period not exceeding 8 months.

UNRWA affirmed that the information is completely unfounded and denies it altogether.

It is noteworthy that the UN agency has been facing budgetary difficulties since 2018 when the United States, the organization’s largest financier, stopped its annual funding of 360 million dollars, and the organization provides assistance to more than five million registered refugees in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, in addition to Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

بيروت: نفت وكالة الأمم المتحدة لإغاثة وتشغيل اللاجئين الفلسطينيين /الأونروا/، اليوم، ما يتردد عن إنهاء عملها في مدة لا تتجاوز الثمانية أشهر.

وقالت وكالة /الأونروا/ في لبنان، في بيان أوردته الوكالة الوطنية اللبنانية للإعلام، إن “بعض مواقع التواصل الاجتماعي نشرت وتداولت اجتماع سري ناقش قضية أمد التمديد لوكالة الغوث /الأونروا/، وأن هناك رغبة أممية للاستغناء عن الوكالة وإيجاد بديل يضمن للاجئين الفلسطينيين الحل العادل لقضيتهم ووضع برنامج تسلسلي للبدء في تطبيق عملي لإنهاء عمل الوكالة في مدة لا تتجاوز الـ 8 أشهر”.

وأكدت /الأونروا/ أن “هذه المعلومات عارية من الصحة تماما وتنفيها جملة وتفصيلا”، مشيرة إلى أن الوكالة مستمرة في تقديم خدماتها للاجئين الفلسطينيين في أقاليم عملها الخمسة بحسب الولاية التي منحت إليها من الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة.

يشار إلى أن الوكالة الأممية تواجه صعوبات تتعلق بالميزانية منذ 2018 عندما أوقفت الولايات المتحدة، أكبر ممول للمنظمة، تمويلها السنوي البالغ 360 مليون دولار، وتقدم المنظمة المساعدة لأكثر من خمسة ملايين لاجئ مسجلين بالضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة والقدس الشرقية، بالإضافة إلى الأردن ولبنان وسوريا.
