FBI says it has reached no conclusion on cause of Beirut blast

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Tuesday it has reached no firm conclusion about what caused the Aug. 4 explosion in the port of Beirut that killed nearly 200 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
Other U.S. and European government agencies closely following the investigations into the explosion strongly believe that the blast was accidental.
“No such conclusion has been reached,” an FBI spokeswoman told Reuters by email. She cited an earlier statement in which the U.S. agency said it would be “providing our Lebanese partners investigative assistance” in their probe.
“Further questions should be directed to the Lebanese authorities as the lead investigators,” the spokeswoman said.
Lebanese media on Tuesday reported that an FBI report into the explosion was handed over to a Lebanese judge on Monday. The FBI declined to comment on the reports.
Two U.S. government sources familiar with official reporting and analysis on the incident said that U.S. agencies were also largely convinced that the blast, involving large quantities of ammonium nitrate which had been stored in a port building for years, was an accident.
A European government source familiar with intelligence reporting and analysis said official European experts also assessed that the explosion was accidental.

واشنطن: قال مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي الأميركي (أف بي آي) يوم الثلاثاء، إنه لم يتوصل إلى نتيجة قاطعة بشأن سبب الانفجار الذي وقع في الرابع من أغسطس/آب في مرفأ بيروت، وأسفر عن سقوط نحو 200 قتيل ووقوع أضرار بمليارات الدولارات.
ويسود اعتقاد قوي لدى وكالات حكومية أميركية وأوروبية أخرى تتابع عن كثب التحقيقات، بأن الانفجار كان عرضياً.
وقالت متحدثة باسم مكتب التحقيقات لـ”رويترز” بالبريد الإلكتروني، “لم يتم التوصل إلى مثل هذا الاستنتاج (القاطع)”. وأشارت إلى بيان قال فيه مكتب التحقيقات في وقت سابق، “سنقدم لشركائنا اللبنانيين المساعدة في التحقيق. “يجب توجيه أسئلة أخرى إلى السلطات اللبنانية بصفتها جهة التحقيق الرئيسية”.
وذكرت وسائل الإعلام اللبنانية يوم الثلاثاء أنه تم تسليم تقرير من مكتب التحقيقات الفيدرالي لقاضٍ لبناني يوم الإثنين. وامتنع مكتب التحقيقات عن التعليق على التقارير.
وقال مصدران حكوميان أميركيان مطلعان على التقارير والتحليلات الرسمية بشأن الحادث، إن الوكالات الأميركية كانت مقتنعة إلى حد كبير بأن الانفجار، الذي اشتمل على كميات كبيرة من نترات الأمونيوم كانت مخزنة في أحد مباني المرفأ منذ سنوات، كان حادثاً.
وقال مصدر حكومي أوروبي مطلع على تقارير المخابرات وتحليلاتها، إن خبراء أوروبيين رسميين قدروا أيضاً أن الانفجار كان عرضياً.
