UN General Assembly Mourns Loss of Late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah

New York: The United Nations General Assembly mourned the passing of the late Amir of Kuwait, HH Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah during a special session on Tuesday, in memory of his legacy in humanitarianism, diplomacy, peace-making and conflict resolution.
United Nations General Assembly President Volkan Bozkir praised the late Amir as a pioneer of preventive diplomacy, due to his commitment to peace and conflict resolution through dialogue.
During his time as Foreign Minister over four decades, he also had a pivotal role in establishing the Gulf Cooperation Council and helped strengthen cooperation in the Middle East and amongst nations of the world, Bozkir added.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the late Amir as a distinguished statesman, a distinguished human being, a builder of bridges and a messenger of peace, saying he prioritized cooperation and pluralism.
Throughout his reign, His Highness gained everyone’s appreciation and respect for his outstanding leadership and commitment to keeping peace. He has always been ready to build bridges between religions, cultures and countries in the neighborhood and beyond, and thanks to insight, political wisdom and perseverance, His Highness formed the preventive diplomatic line of Kuwait in the region and at the international level, Guterres added.
Guterres indicated that Sheikh Sabah played a vital role in mediating, facilitating dialogue and spreading messages of peace, tolerance and coexistence, describing him as a close friend of the UN.
He expressed the UN’s aspiration for the continuation of the strong partnership and friendship with the State of Kuwait based on the legacy of His Highness, pledging to continue supporting the Kuwaiti mediation efforts and its role in promoting peace and stability.
Representatives of Arab and African countries, the Group of Eastern European Countries, Asian and Pacific Countries, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western European Countries and the United States hailed the contributions of the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the international humanitarian efforts in all countries around the world.

وقال السيد فولكان بوزكر رئيس الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، في كلمة له خلال جلسة خاصة عقدتها الجمعية العامة لتأبين الأمير الراحل الشيخ صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح، إنه “عرف عن الفقيد ريادته للدبلوماسية الوقائية، والتزامه بالسلام وحل النزاعات عبر الحوار، حيث كان وزيرا للخارجية في الكويت لأربعة عقود، وكان له دور محوري في إنشاء مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية وتعزيز التعاون في منطقة الشرق الأوسط والعالم”، منوها إلى أن العمل الإنساني لسموه تجاوز الشرق الأوسط إلى مختلف أنحاء العالم.
من جانبه، قال السيد أنطونيو غوتيريش الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة “لقد كان سمو الأمير الراحل رجل دولة وسلام متميزا وباني جسور التواصل، ونحزن مع الكويت على خسارته”، مضيفا أنه “طوال فترة حكمه نال سموه التقدير والاحترام من القريب والبعيد لقيادته البارزة والتزامه بصنع السلام، كما كان دائم الاستعداد لمد الجسور بين الأديان والثقافات والبلدان بفضل بصيرته وحكمته السياسية ومثابرته وحصافة رأيه”.
كما أشار غوتيريش إلى أن الشيخ صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح لعب دورا حيويا في التوسط في الأزمات وتيسير الحوار ونشر رسائل السلام والتسامح والتعايش، واصفا إياه بـ”الصديق المقرب من الأمم المتحدة” خاصة أنه كان على الخطوط الأمامية لتعبئة المجتمع الدولي في أعمال التضامن، معربا عن تطلع الأمم المتحدة إلى استمرار الشراكة القوية والصداقة مع دولة الكويت بناء على إرث سموه، ومعربا عن ثقته من أن جهود الفقيد الحثيثة في الدبلوماسية الإقليمية والدولية والاستقرار “ستبقى أولوية لدولة الكويت”.
من جانبهم، أشاد ممثلو الدول العربية والدول الإفريقية، ومجموعة بلدان شرق أوروبا، ودول آسيا والمحيط الهادئ، وأمريكا اللاتينية ومنطقة الكاريبي، ودول أوروبا الغربية، وممثلة الولايات المتحدة في كلماتهم، بإسهامات الأمير الراحل الشيخ صباح الأحمد الجابر الصباح في الجهود الإنسانية الدولية في كافة أنحاء العالم.
