WMO Warns of Climate Changes Impact on Air Quality

Geneva: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that continued global warming would pollute the atmosphere and increase the extreme heatwaves.

Experts at WMO noted that extreme heat can cause wildfires, omitting dangerous smoke that pollutes the air, and making it unsafe to breathe for millions. And due to drought, large amounts of sand dust rise from deserts to the atmosphere.

According to Secretary-General of WMO Professor Petteri Taalas, experts are expecting a worsening air quality, with knock-on effects on human health, ecosystems, agriculture and indeed our daily lives, because 2023 was the hottest summer on record, in addition to the wildfires that covered large areas in Canada, the US and the Mediterranean region, with smoke even reaching the Arctic.

WMO scientific officer in the Global Atmosphere Watch Programme (GAW) Dr. Lorenzo Labrador, warned that smoke from forest fires contains chemicals that affect air quality, health, and damages plants, ecosystems and agricultural crops, as well as increase the proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere.

According to a number of forecasters, high temperatures contribute to the formation of Earth-level ozone smog, which is harmful to people, animals and plants, and together threaten not only public health, but also food security.

More so, a report released by the organization indicated that the world’s average food crop losses due to ozone are 4.4-12.4 percent and losses of 15-30 percent in wheat and soybeans in the major agricultural regions of India and China.

وأشار خبراء من المنظمة إلى أن الحرارة الشديدة تسبب حرائق الغابات، والدخان المنبعث منها يلوث الهواء ويجعله غير آمن لتنفس ملايين الأشخاص، وبسبب الجفاف ترتفع كميات كبيرة من الغبار الرملي من الصحاري إلى الغلاف الجوي.

وقال البروفيسور بيتيري تالاس الأمين العام للمنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية: ” يتوقع الخبراء المزيد من التدهور في الحالة المناخية والظروف الجوية، لأن صيف 2023 كان الأكثر سخونة على الإطلاق، وبالإضافة إلى ذلك شملت حرائق الغابات مساحات واسعة في كندا والولايات المتحدة ومنطقة البحر الأبيض المتوسط، حتى أن دخانها وصل إلى القطب الشمالي”.

من جهته، حذر الدكتور لورينتسو لابرادور من المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية من أن الدخان المنبعث من حرائق الغابات يحتوي على مواد كيميائية تؤثر في جودة الهواء والصحة ويلحق الضرر بالنباتات والنظم البيئية والمحاصيل الزراعية، وكذلك يزيد من نسبة ثاني أكسيد الكربون في الغلاف الجوي.

ووفقا لعدد من خبراء الأرصاد، تساهم درجات الحرارة المرتفعة في تكوين الضباب الدخاني للأوزون على مستوى الأرض، الضار للناس والحيوانات والنباتات، وهذه العوامل مجتمعة لا تهدد الصحة العامة فقط، بل والأمن الغذائي أيضا.

وقد أشار تقرير أصدرته المنظمة إلى أن متوسط خسائر المحاصيل الغذائية على الصعيد العالمي بسبب الأوزون، يبلغ 4.4 – 12.4 بالمئة وخسائر تتراوح بين 15-30 بالمئة في القمح وفول الصويا في المناطق الزراعية الرئيسية في الهند والصين.
