WMO: Earth Experienced Hottest Three Months Ever in Summer 2023

Geneva: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed that Earth experienced the hottest three-month period in its history this summer, punctuated by numerous heat records across the globe as sea surface temperatures soared to unprecedented levels, according to a climate study from the European Union.
The analysis determined that July 2023 was the hottest month in recorded history, followed by the warmest August ever documented, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, which tracks global climate data for the EU. Both months followed a record-setting June that kicked off the extraordinary summer heat wave.
August was about 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than pre-industrial averages. That is the threshold that the world is trying not to pass, though scientists are more concerned about rises in temperatures over decades, not merely a blip over a months time.
The worlds oceans – more than 70% of the Earths surface – were the hottest ever recorded, nearly 21 C (69.8 F), and have set high temperature marks for three consecutive months, the WMO and Copernicus said.
So far, 2023 is the second hottest year on record, behind 2016, according to Copernicus.
Scientists blame ever warming human-caused climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas with an extra push from a natural El Nino, which is a temporary warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean that changes weather worldwide. Usually an El Nino, which started earlier this year, adds extra heat to global temperatures but more so in its second year.
“Our planet has just endured a season of simmering – the hottest summer on record,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned in the report. “Climate breakdown has begun. Scientists have long warned what our fossil fuel addiction will unleash. Surging temperatures demand a surge in action. Leaders must turn up the heat now for climate solutions. We can still avoid the worst of climate chaos – and we don’t have a moment to lose.” “What we are observing, not only new extremes but the persistence of these record-breaking conditions, and the impacts these have on both people and planet, are a clear consequence of the warming of the climate system,” Copernicus Climate Change Service Director Carlo Buontempo said.
“Antarctic sea ice extent was literally off the charts, and the global sea surface temperature was once again at a new record,” WMOs secretary-general, Petteri Taalas, said in a statement released to the media. “It is worth noting that this is happening before we see the full warming impact of the El Nino event, which typically plays out in the second year after it develops.” The new readings on high global temperatures came as WMO released Wednesday its latest bulletin on air quality and climate, noting that extreme heat, compounded by wildfires and desert dust, has had a measurable impact on air quality, human health and the environment.

وكان متوسط درجة حرارة سطح البحر في أغسطس الماضي الأعلى على الإطلاق حيث بلغت 20.98 درجة مئوية، فضلا عن كونه أيضا الشهر الأكثر دفئا بنحو 1.5 درجة مئوية من متوسط درجة الحرارة في فترة ما قبل العصر الصناعي ما بين عامي 1850 و1900.
من جانبه، قال كارلو بونتيمبو مدير خدمة كوبرنيكوس لتغير المناخ “إن ما نلاحظه، ليس فقط الظواهر المتطرفة الجديدة ولكن استمرار هذه الظروف القياسية، وتأثيراتها على كل من الناس والكوكب، وهو نتيجة واضحة لارتفاع درجة حرارة النظام المناخي”.

وكان الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة قد حذر، في يوليو الماضي، من تواصل الارتفاع القياسي في درجة حرارة كوكب الأرض بسبب ظاهرة الاحتباس الحراري، قائلا:” إن عصر الاحتباس الحراري قد ولى، وحل عصر الغليان العالمي”، في أعقاب تأكيد علماء المناخ أن شهر يوليو الماضي هو أكثر الأشهر تسجيلا للارتفاع في الحرارة في العالم.
