WMO: Most of Globe Drier Than Normal in 2021

Geneva: A report issued on Wednesday by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that large parts of the globe have become drier than normal in 2021 with cascading effects on economies, ecosystems and our daily lives.

According to the agency’s first report on global water resources, areas that were unusually dry included South America’s Rio de la Plata area, where a persistent drought has affected the region since 2019.

In Africa, major rivers such as the Niger, Volta, Nile and Congo had below-average water flow in 2021. The same trend was observed in rivers in parts of Russia, West Siberia and in Central Asia.

On the other hand, there were above-normal river volumes in some North American basins, the North Amazon and South Africa, as well as in China’s Amur river basin, and northern India.

WMO said that 3.6 billion people have inadequate access to water at least one month per year and that this is expected to increase to more than five billion by 2050.

WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas said :”the impacts of climate change are often felt through water – more intense and frequent droughts, more extreme flooding, more erratic seasonal rainfall and accelerated melting of glaciers – with cascading effects on economies, ecosystems and all aspects of our daily lives.” “And yet, there is insufficient understanding of changes in the distribution, quantity, and quality of freshwater resources,” he added.

“The State of Global Water Resources report aims to fill that knowledge gap and provide a concise overview of water availability in different parts of the world,” he explained, adding “this will inform climate adaptation and mitigation investments as well as the United Nations campaign to provide universal access in the next five years to early warnings of hazards such as floods and droughts.”

جنيف: أكد تقرير أممي صادر عن المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية، على أن معظم أنحاء العالم كانت أكثر جفافا من المعتاد في عام 2021، في ظل آثار متتالية على الاقتصادات والنظم البيئية وحياتنا اليومية.

وبحسب تقرير الوكالة الأول عن موارد المياه العالمية، فإن المناطق التي كانت جافة بشكل غير عادي تشمل منطقة /ريو دي لا بلاتا/ في أمريكا الجنوبية، حيث أثر الجفاف المستمر على المنطقة منذ عام 2019.

وفي أفريقيا، كان تدفق المياه في الأنهار الرئيسية مثل النيجر وفولتا والنيل والكونغو أقل من المتوسط في عام 2021، ولوحظ نفس الاتجاه في الأنهار في أجزاء من روسيا وغرب سيبيريا وآسيا الوسطى.

من ناحية أخرى، كانت أحجام الأنهار أعلى من المعتاد في بعض أحواض أمريكا الشمالية وشمال الأمازون وجنوب أفريقيا، وكذلك في حوض نهر أمور بالصين وشمال الهند.

وقالت المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية “إن 3.6 مليار شخص لا يحصلون على المياه بشكل كاف لمدة شهر واحد على الأقل في السنة، وإنه من المتوقع أن يرتفع هذا العدد إلى أكثر من خمسة مليارات بحلول عام 2050”.

وقال البروفيسور بيتيري تالاس الأمين العام للمنظمة، “غالبا ما نستشعر آثار تغير المناخ من خلال المياه، موجات الجفاف الأكثر كثافة وتكرارا، والفيضانات الشديدة، والأمطار الموسمية غير المنتظمة، وذوبان الأنهار الجليدية المتسارع، مع آثار متتالية على الاقتصادات، والنظم البيئية وجميع جوانب حياتنا اليومية، ومع ذلك، لا يوجد فهم كاف للتغيرات في توزيع وكمية ونوعية موارد المياه العذبة”.

وأضاف “أن تقرير حالة الموارد المائية العالمية يهدف إلى سد تلك الفجوة المعرفية وتقديم لمحة موجزة عن توافر المياه في أجزاء مختلفة من العالم، حيث أنه سيساعد في استثمارات التكيف مع المناخ والتخفيف من آثاره وكذلك في حملة الأمم المتحدة، لتوفير الوصول الشامل في السنوات الخمس المقبلة إلى الإنذارات المبكرة للأخطار مثل الفيضانات والجفاف”.
