France May Restart Coal-Fired Power Plant to Deal with Energy Crisis

Paris: France is likely to restart coal-fired power plant to cope with the energy crisis fueled by the war in Ukraine.

The French Energy Transition Ministry said it was considering reopening the station at Saint-Avold in eastern France this winter, “given the situation in Ukraine” and the effect it was having on the energy markets.

“We are keeping open the possibility of being able to put the Saint-Avold station back in action for a few hours more if we need it next winter,” said a ministry statement, confirming a report on RTL radio.

Saint-Avold was only closed on March 31, and the only coal-fired power station still operating in France is in Cordemais, in the west of the country.

Most of Frances electricity production comes from nuclear power: 67 percent in 2020. In the same year, coal only accounted for 0.3 percent.

President Emmanuel Macron’s commitment to eventually shut all Frances coal-fired stations remained unchanged, the ministry statement said.

باريس: قالت وزارة الانتقال الطاقي الفرنسية إنها قد تستأنف الشتاء القادم انتاج الكهرباء من محطة تعمل بالفحم في شرق البلاد بعد أن أغلقتها في مارس الماضي، وذلك بسبب اضطراب سوق الطاقة جراء الحرب في أوكرانيا.

وأضافت الوزارة أن هناك “احتمال لتشغيل محطة الطاقة في سان أفولد لبضع ساعات إضافية إذا احتجنا إليها في الشتاء المقبل”، مضيفة “سيبقى على أي حال انتاج الكهرباء بالفحم دون عتبة واحد في المئة من إجمالي الانتاج”.

هناك حاليا محطة طاقة واحدة فقط تعمل بالفحم غرب فرنسا التي تنتج أكثر من 67 بالمئة من الكهرباء عبر محطات نووية، في حين بلغت حصة الكهرباء المنتجة عبر الوقود الأحفوري في عام 2020 نحو 7,5 بالمئة تنقسم إلى 0,3 بالمئة عبر الفحم و6,9 بالمئة عبر الغاز.

وأكدت الوزارة أن إعادة التشغيل لا تمس بالتزام الرئيس إيمانويل ماكرون إغلاق كل محطات الطاقة التي تعمل بالفحم في فرنسا.
