Paris: Wheat prices jumped to a record level today, after India decided to ban its exports at a time when the country is witnessing a heat wave that has damaged crops.

After recording a rise in the wake of war between Russia and Ukraine, the main source of wheat, the price of that main commodity rose to 435 euros (453, euros) per ton on the European market.

This comes after India, the second largest producer of wheat in the world, announced a ban on the export of wheat without special government permission, due to the decline in production due to severe heat waves.

New Delhi, which has pledged to supply poor countries that were dependent on exports from Ukraine, said it wanted to ensure “food security” for India’s 1.4 billion people. A decision that would “exacerbate the crisis” of grain supplies at the global level, as the Group of Seven warned yesterday.

The previous record dates back to May 13, when the price of a ton of wheat stood at 422 euros at the opening, in light of the new US global forecasts that Ukrainian wheat production would be reduced by a third for 2022-2023.

The price of wheat rose months ago to unprecedented levels in global markets, and its price increased by 40 percent within three months.

It is noteworthy that this would exacerbate the global food crisis affecting some countries, which is what the World Food Program said when it recently warned that 44 million people around the world are heading towards starvation due to the repercussions of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

وبعد تسجيله ارتفاعا في أعقاب الحرب الروسية الأوكرانية، المصدر الرئيسي للقمح، ارتفع سعر السلعة الغذائية الرئيسية إلى 435 يورو (453 دولارا) للطن في السوق الأوروبية.

يأتي ذلك بعدما أعلنت الهند، ثاني أكبر منتج للقمح في العالم، حظر تصدير القمح بدون إذن حكومي خاص، بسبب تراجع الإنتاج جراء موجات الحر الشديد.

وقالت نيودلهي، التي تعهدت بتزويد الدول الفقيرة التي كانت تعتمد على الصادرات من أوكرانيا، إنها تريد ضمان “الأمن الغذائي” لسكان الهند البالغ عددهم 1,4 مليار نسمة. وهو قرار من شأنه أن “يؤدي إلى تفاقم أزمة” إمدادات الحبوب على المستوى العالمي، كما حذرت مجموعة السبع يوم أمس الأول السبت.

يعود الرقم القياسي السابق إلى 13 مايو، حيث بلغ سعر طن القمح 422 يورو عند الافتتاح، في ضوء التوقعات العالمية الأمريكية الجديدة بانخفاض إنتاج القمح الأوكراني بمقدار الثلث لعام 2022 – 2023.

وارتفع سعر القمح منذ أشهر إلى مستويات غير مسبوقة في الأسواق العالمية، وزاد سعره بنسبة 40 بالمئة خلال ثلاثة أشهر.

يشار إلى أن هذا من شأنه أن يفاقم من أزمة الغذاء العالمية التي تطال بعض البلدان وهو ما ذهب اليه برنامج الغذاء العالمي عندما حذر مؤخرا من أن 44 مليون شخص حول العالم يتجهون نحو المجاعة بسبب تداعيات الحرب الروسية الأوكرانية.
