UNICEF: Billion of Worlds Most Vulnerable Children are at Risk Due to Climate Change

New York: A recent report by UNICEF said that 1 billion of the worlds most vulnerable children are at extreme risk due to climate action.
“Already, the climate crisis has exposed nearly every child, on every continent, to greater risk of more frequent, intense, and destructive climate hazards, from heatwaves and droughts to cyclones and flooding, from air pollution to vector-borne diseases,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said.
“But for some children, the climate crisis is more than a heightened risk. It is a life-threatening reality,” she added.
“UNICEFs recently released Childrens Climate Risk Index the first comprehensive analysis of climate and environmental risk from a childs perspective shows that 1 billion children live in extremely high-risk countries where they are exposed to the most severe hazards, shocks, and stressors. It warned that If the world fails to act, tomorrow it will be all children.
“The evidence is irrefutable the climate crisis is a childrens crisis. And yet, children are consistently overlooked in climate crisis response planning. Investing in the needs of children most impacted by climate change is not a priority. In many cases it is not even on the agenda, UNICEF Executive Director noted.
“The world cannot continue to overlook children as it grapples with the existential threat of climate change and environmental degradation. It is time to put our children at the center of climate action,” she added.
UNICEF called on every country to commit to ensuring child-centered adaptation is a centerpiece of all climate plans as a matter of highest priority.
“To be effective, child-centered adaptation plans and resilience measures need to be multi-sectoral, covering the critical sectors that support childrens survival and wellbeing: Water and sanitation; health, nutrition, and education; social policy and child protection. They also need to focus resources and attention on reaching the most marginalized and vulnerable children from the poorest communities. Just as important, they must be developed and implemented with the engagement and participation of young people — ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are reflected in decisions. Lastly, they must be appropriately and urgently funded and resourced,” she said.

نيويورك: لفت تقرير صادر عن منظمة الأمم المتحدة للطفولة /اليونيسف/ إلى أن أكثر من مليار طفل من الأطفال الذين يعيشون في بلدان شديدة الخطورة، يتعرضون لأشد المخاطر والصدمات والضغوط… محذرة من أن فشل العالم في التحرك هو السبب بأن يصبح كل الأطفال عرضة للخطر.
وقالت كاثرين راسيل، المديرة التنفيذية لليونيسف : “إن أزمة المناخ عرضت بشكل أكبر كل طفل تقريبا، في كل قارة، لمخاطر مناخية متكررة وأكثر شدة وتدميرا، من موجات الحر والجفاف إلى الأعاصير والفيضانات، من تلوث الهواء إلى الأمراض المحمولة بالنواقل”.
وأضافت أنه بالنسبة لبعض الأطفال، فإن أزمة المناخ هي أكثر من مجرد خطر متزايد، إنها حقيقة تهدد الحياة، والتأثير على هؤلاء الأطفال وعائلاتهم ومستقبلهم .
وأكد التقرير الذي جاء حول مؤشر مخاطر المناخ لدى الأطفال، وهو أول تحليل شامل للمخاطر المناخية والبيئية من منظور الطفل، أن أزمة المناخ ليست تهديدا مستقبليا، بل إنها هنا وتتسارع، وتستمر في التأثير على العالم بطرق مدمرة بشكل متزايد.
وقالت المديرة التنفيذية لليونيسف: إن الدليل لا يقبل الشك أزمة المناخ هي أزمة أطفال. “ومع ذلك، يتم تجاهل الأطفال باستمرار في التخطيط للاستجابة لأزمة المناخ. الاستثمار في احتياجات الأطفال الأكثر تأثرا بتغير المناخ لم يكن أولوية. في كثير من الحالات لم يكن حتى على جدول الأعمال”.
ودعت إلى وضع الأطفال في صلب العمل المناخي. كما دعت الدول إلى الالتزام بضمان أن يكون التكيف الذي يركز على الطفل حجر الزاوية في جميع خطط المناخ باعتباره مسألة ذات أولوية قصوى… مطالبة الحكومات بتنفيذ تخفيضات طموحة للانبعاثات لمساعدة الأطفال الأكثر ضعفا، الذين يعيشون في بلدان ذات أقل انبعاثات بالنسبة للفرد الواحد، والتكيّف مع آثار تغير المناخ، حتى يتمكنوا من البقاء والازدهار في عالم سريع التغير”.
وأشارت إلى أنه لكي تكون خطط التكيّف التي تركز على الطفل وتدابير المرونة فعّالة، يجب أن تكون متعددة القطاعات، وتغطي القطاعات الحيوية التي تدعم بقاء الأطفال ورفاههم المياه والصرف الصحي والصحة والتغذية والتعليم والسياسة الاجتماعية وحماية الطفل.
