UN General Assembly Begins Emergency Session on Ukraine

New York: The emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly on Ukraine, which was called by the UN Security Council on Sunday, began yesterday evening.

In an opening speech, President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdullah Shahid described the Russian military operation in Ukraine as an “insult to the United Nations”, calling on Moscow to stop fighting and return to diplomacy to resolve differences.

For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that fighting in Ukraine must stop now and a return to diplomacy to achieve peace, stressing the need to “respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Guterres added that the United Nations will continue to provide assistance in efforts to reach a ceasefire, will not abandon the Ukrainian people, and will allocate $20 million to help the population in the eastern parts of Ukraine, expressing his hope that negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian sides will lead to a resolution of the situation.

Yesterday, the UN Security Council voted on a procedural resolution calling for an emergency session of the UN General Assembly on Ukraine today.

The 15-member council’s resolution was adopted by 11 votes, while Russia voted against the resolution.

Last Friday, Russia, in its capacity as a permanent member of the Security Council, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution that would have deplored Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

نيويورك: بدأت مساء الأمس أعمال الجلسة الطارئة للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة حول أوكرانيا ، التي دعا إليها مجلس الأمن الدولي يوم /الأحد/.

ووصف السيد عبد الله شاهد رئيس الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، في كلمته الافتتاحية، العملية العسكرية الروسية في أوكرانيا بأنها “إهانة للأمم المتحدة”، داعيا موسكو إلى وقف القتال، والعودة إلى الدبلوماسية لحل الخلافات.

ومن جانبه، قال السيد أنطونيو غوتيريش الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة إنه يجب وقف القتال في أوكرانيا الآن، والعودة إلى الدبلوماسية لتحقيق السلام.. مشددا على ضرورة “احترام سيادة أوكرانيا وسلامة أراضيها”.

وأضاف غوتيريش أن الأمم المتحدة ستواصل تقديم المساعدة في جهود التوصل إلى وقف النار ولن تتخلى عن الشعب الأوكراني، كما ستخصص مبلغ 20 مليون دولار لمساعدة السكان في الأجزاء الشرقية من أوكرانيا.. معبرا عن أمله في أن تؤدي المفاوضات بين الجانبين الروسي والأوكراني إلى حلحلة الوضع.

وكان مجلس الأمن الدولي قد صوت أمس /الأحد/ على قرار إجرائي يدعو لعقد جلسة طارئة للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة حول أوكرانيا اليوم.

وتم اعتماد قرار المجلس المؤلف من 15 عضوا، بأغلبية 11 صوتا، بينما صوتت روسيا بالرفض على القرار.

واستخدمت روسيا يوم الجمعة الماضي حق النقض (الفيتو) بصفتها عضوا دائما في مجلس الأمن ضد مشروع قرار للمجلس بشأن أحداث أوكرانيا.
