Two Natural Earthquakes Hit Near N. Korea’s Nuclear Test Site

Seoul: South Korea’s state weather agency announced Tuesday that two minor natural earthquakes hit near North Korea’s nuclear testing site Monday.

A 2.3 magnitude tremor occurred about 36 kilometers north-northwest of Kilju, North Hamgyong Province at a depth of 22 km on the surface of the earth, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) said.

Another 2.3 magnitude quake struck about 37 kilometers north of the region, where North Korea’s Punggye-ri nuclear testing site is located at a depth of 18 km, the KMA said.

Both are presumed to have occurred naturally, the agency added.

They followed a 3.1 magnitude natural earthquake that struck the region Friday.

Over 20 earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or bigger have struck regions near Kilju since 1978, with a 3.2 magnitude quake that occurred Sept. 23, 2017, being the strongest.

So far, eight quakes with a magnitude of 2.0 or bigger have been reported on the Korean Peninsula this year.

سول: أعلنت إدارة الأرصاد الجوية بكوريا الجنوبية يوم أمس، أنه تم رصد هزتين أرضيتين “طبيعيتين” منخفضتي الشدة وقعتا، الإثنين، بالقرب من موقع التجارب النووية في كوريا الشمالية.

وأفادت الإدارة بأن هزة أرضية بقوة 2,3 درجة على مقياس ريختر، وقعت على بعد حوالي 36 كيلومترا شمال غربي مدينة كيلجو بإقليم هامكيونغ الشمالي، وعلى عمق 22 كيلومترا على سطح الأرض.

وأضافت أن هزة أرضية أخرى بقوة 2,3 درجة وقعت على بعد حوالي 37 كيلومترا شمال المنطقة، حيث موقع “بونغي-ري” للتجارب النووية، وعلى عمق 18 كيلومترا.

واعتبرت الإدارة أن كلاهما “ظاهرة طبيعية”.. وجاءت الهزتان بعد وقوع هزة أرضية أخرى بلغت قوتها 3,1 درجة في المنطقة، الجمعة الماضي.

يذكر أنه ضرب أكثر من 20 هزة أرضية بقوة درجتين أو أكثر المناطق بالقرب من كيلجو منذ عام 1978، وكانت الهزة الأرضية التي بلغت قوتها 3.2 درجة ووقعت في 23 سبتمبر من عام 2017 هي أقواها.

وحتى الآن، تم الإبلاغ عن ثمانية هزات أرضية بقوة درجتين أو أكثر في شبه الجزيرة الكورية هذا العام.
