US and Turkey to Hold Second Round of Talks on F-35 Fighter Program

Ankara: The Turkish Ministry of Defense revealed plans to hold a second round of talks with the United States regarding the F-35 fighter program in the next few months.

Major Pinar Kara, tasked at press and public relations consultancy services of the Turkish Ministry of National Defense said during a press conference held today in the capital, Ankara, that the Turkish and US defense ministries are working to end the differences over the F-35 fighter issue.

She said last week, we received an American delegation in the capital, Ankara, to discuss this matter, and it was agreed to resume talks, with the second meeting to be held in Washington within the next few months, adding: “Turkey’s position is clear. We want to return to the project and receive the fighters designated for Turkey, otherwise we want to recover the money we spent during our involvement in the project, amounting to one billion and 400 million dollars.”

Yesterday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met his US counterpart Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Rome, and they agreed to intensify cooperation in Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, the eastern Mediterranean and the economic sphere.

Erdogan said in a press statements after his meeting with his American counterpart, that he and Biden negotiated the supply of F-16 fighters to Turkey, stressing that he did not notice any negative approach from Biden in this regard. He said “we also discussed the F-35 fighters issue and the amount we paid for the project which is worth one billion and 400 million dollars.

Erdogan stressed that he agreed with the US President to establish a joint mechanism between the two countries in security, defense, trade, counter-terrorism and regional issues.

أنقرة: كشفت وزارة الدفاع التركية عن التخطيط لإجراء جولة ثانية من المحادثات مع الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية بشأن ملف مقاتلات /إف35/ خلال الأشهر القليلة القادمة.

وأوضحت السيدة بينار قره الرائد في مستشارية الإعلام والعلاقات العامة بوزارة الدفاع التركية، خلال مؤتمر صحفي عقدته اليوم في العاصمة أنقرة، أن وزارتي الدفاع التركية والأمريكية تعملان على إنهاء الخلافات الحاصلة حول ملف مقاتلات /إف35/.

وأضافت: “الأسبوع الماضي استقبلنا وفدا أمريكيا في العاصمة أنقرة لبحث هذا الشأن، وتم الاتفاق على استئناف المحادثات على أن يكون الاجتماع الثاني في واشنطن خلال الأشهر القليلة القادمة”.

وأردفت: “موقف تركيا واضح، نريد العودة إلى المشروع واستلام المقاتلات المخصصة لتركيا، وإلا فإننا نريد استعادة الأموال التي أنفقناها أثناء انخراطنا في المشروع والبالغة قيمتها مليار و400 مليون دولار”.

وكان الرئيس التركي رجب طيب أردوغان التقى أمس نظيره الأمريكي جو بايدن على هامش قمة العشرين في روما، واتفقا على تكثيف التعاون في أفغانستان وسوريا وليبيا وشرق المتوسط والمجال الاقتصادي.

وذكر أردوغان في تصريحات صحفية عقب لقائه نظيره الأمريكي، أنه وبايدن تفاوضا حول توريد مقاتلات /إف-16/ لتركيا مؤكدا أنه لم يلحظ أي مقاربة سلبية من بايدن بهذا الصدد.. مضيفا “ناقشنا أيضا ملف مقاتلات /إف 35/ والمبلغ الذي سددناه لصالح المشروع والبالغ قيمته مليار و400 مليون دولار”.

وأكد أردوغان أنه اتفق مع الرئيس الأمريكي على إنشاء آلية مشتركة بين البلدين في شؤون الأمن والدفاع والتجارة ومكافحة الإرهاب والقضايا الإقليمية.
