A quarter of a million Lebanese emigrated in just 5 months

As one of the repercussions of the worst economic crisis in its history, Lebanon is facing a new wave of immigration, and as the impact of the historic collapse intensifies, most Lebanese are trying to search for new opportunities, as if they are jumping to escape a sinking ship.

The head of the Lebanese Labora Organization, Father Tony Khadra, said that “nearly 230,000 Lebanese have migrated to the country in the first five months of this year”, Lebanese media reported Monday.

Khadra explained that 90% of the Lebanese with foreign nationalities left the country between September and October, especially before the start of the new school year, including a large group of businessmen who moved their businesses abroad, according to Lebanese media.

The Lebanese General Security Service issued an average of 32,500 passports per month, from the beginning of 2021 to August, compared with 17,750 in the same period in 2020.

According to Mohamed Shams El-Din, a researcher at the International Information Corporation, passport demand has increased 83: in one year.

Lebanon has been reeling from a severe financial crisis since late 2019, and since then, the local currency has lost about 90% of its value, poverty has increased and the banking system has been paralysed.

Since the country descended into a major financial crisis in 2019, U.S. dollar trading stopped in Lebanon, and those who have U.S .dollar bank accounts were only able to make withdrawals in Lebanese pounds, according to an exchange rate of 3900 pounds to the dollar.

وأوضح خضرا إن 90% من اللبنانيين الحاملين لجنسيات أجنبية غادروا البلاد بين سبتمبر وأكتوبر خاصة قبل بدء العام الدراسي الجديد، بينهم مجموعة كبيرة من رجال الأعمال الذين نقلوا أعمالهم إلى الخارج، بحسب وسائل إعلام لبنانية.

كما أن جهاز الأمن العام اللبناني أصدر 32500 جواز سفر في المتوسط شهرياً، منذ بداية 2021 حتى أغسطس الماضي، في مقابل 17750 في الفترة ذاتها من 2020.

ووفق الباحث في مؤسسة “الدولية للمعلومات” محمد شمس الدين، فإن ذلك يعني أن الإقبال على جوازات السفر ارتفع في عام واحد بنحو 83%.

هذا ويئن لبنان تحت وطأة أزمة مالية طاحنة منذ أواخر 2019، ومنذ ذلك الحين، فقدت العملة المحلية نحو 90% من قيمتها وزادت نسبة الفقر وأصيب النظام المصرفي بحالة من الشلل.

ومنذ انزلاق البلاد إلى أزمة مالية كبيرة عام 2019، تبخرت العملة الصعبة في لبنان ولم يتمكن من يملكون حسابات بالدولار الأمريكي إلا من إجراء عمليات سحب بالليرة اللبنانية وفق سعر صرف يبلغ 3900 ليرة للدولار.
