WHO: Yemen Faces Food Security Emergency

Aden: The World Health Organization (WHO) said that Yemen faces a food security emergency due to the continuing escalating conflict in the country for more than six years.

In a press release Monday, the organization said that the economic crisis in Yemen has led to a rise in the national inflation rate and the destruction of the purchasing power of citizens.

According to the Integrated Food Security and Phase Classification (IPC) data, 16.2 million Yemenis, more than half of the total population, suffer from acute food insecurity, while 11 million people suffer from crises, which is the third stage, and 5 million are in the emergency stage, which is the fourth stage.

WHO pointed out that Yemen continues to report high levels of malnutrition and has the highest rates of stunting and wasting in the world.

According to the United Nations (UN), 46 percent of children in Yemen under the age of five suffer from chronic malnutrition (stunting), and 16 percent of children under the age of five suffer from acute malnutrition (wasting).

The organization said there are more than one million pregnant and lactating women in Yemen, where one in two children is expected to suffer from acute malnutrition. Anemia rates exceed 70 percent among children under five and pregnant and lactating women.

عدن: قالت منظمة الصحة العالمية إن اليمن يواجه حالة طوارئ تتعلق بالأمن الغذائي بسبب استمرار الصراع المتصاعد في البلاد منذ أكثر من ست سنوات.

وأضافت المنظمة، في بيان صحفي نشر هنا يوم الأمس، أن الأزمة الاقتصادية التي يعاني منها اليمن أدت أيضا إلى ارتفاع معدل التضخم الوطني وتدمير القوة الشرائية للمواطنين.

وأكدت أنه وفقا لبيانات التصنيف المتكامل لمراحل الأمن الغذائي فإن 16.2مليون يمني أي ما يعادل 54 بالمئة من إجمالي السكان يعانون من انعدام الأمن الغذائي الحاد، فيما يعاني 11 مليون شخص من الأزمات وهي المرحلة الثالثة، كما يتواجد 5 ملايين في مرحلة الطوارئ وهي المرحلة الرابعة.

وأشارت إلى أن اليمن لا يزال يرصد مستويات عالية من سوء التغذية ويبلغ عن أعلى معدلات الهزال والتقزم في العالم.

وبحسب المنظمة الأممية فإن 46 بالمئة من الأطفال باليمن دون سن الخامسة يعانون من سوء التغذية المزمن /التقزم/، كما يعاني 16 بالمئة من الأطفال دون سن الخامسة من سوء التغذية الحاد /الهزال/.

ولفتت إلى أنه يوجد في اليمن أكثر من مليون امرأة حامل ومرضع، حيث يتوقع أن يعاني واحد من كل طفلين من سوء التغذية الحاد، كما تتجاوز معدلات فقر الدم 70 بالمئة بين الأطفال دون سن الخامسة والنساء الحوامل والمرضعات.
