UNICEF Urges Greater Action to Address Childrens Needs in Afghanistan

New York: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is urging countries to do more to meet the growing needs of children in Afghanistan.
In a statement after concluding his visit to Afghanistan, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Omar Abdi said that in the nutrition ward, he met dozens of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition, highlighting the childrens need to access basic health care, immunization, nutrition, water and sanitation, and child protection services.
He also called for polio, measles, and COVID immunization campaigns to resume immediately to help protect children and communities from vaccine-preventable diseases, according to the UNICEF website.
Abdi stressed the critical importance of ensuring all boys and girls are allowed to continue their education at all levels and participate meaningfully in building the future of their country.
“UNICEF will continue to press for the rights of every girl, boy, and woman in Afghanistan. Our objective is to see an Afghanistan where every girl and every boy are in school, have quality health care, and are protected from all forms of violence,” Abdi said. “The de facto authorities, UN member states, donors, and humanitarian organizations must act together immediately to prevent the humanitarian crisis from deteriorating further, in the interest of childrens survival in Afghanistan,” he added.
Without immediate action, UNICEF estimates that 1 million children in Afghanistan could suffer from severe acute malnutrition in 2021 and are at risk of dying.

وأوضح السيد عمر عبدي نائب المديرة التنفيذية لليونيسف في بيان له بعد اختتام زيارته إلى أفغانستان، أن هناك عشرات الأطفال الذين يعانون من سوء التغذية الحاد الشديد، وهي حالة تهدد حياتهم.. مبينا حاجة الأطفال للوصول إلى الرعاية الصحية الأساسية، والتحصين، والتغذية، والمياه والصرف الصحي، وخدمات حماية الطفل.
كما دعا عبدي إلى استئناف حملات التحصين ضد شلل الأطفال والحصبة و/كوفيد-19/ على الفور، للمساعدة في حماية الأطفال والمجتمعات من الأمراض التي يمكن الوقاية منها باللقاحات.. مشددا على الأهمية الحاسمة لضمان مواصلة جميع الفتيان والفتيات تعليمهم على جميع المستويات، والمشاركة بشكل هادف في بناء مستقبل بلدهم.
وأضاف بقوله: “ستواصل اليونيسف الضغط من أجل حقوق كل فتاة وفتى وامرأة في أفغانستان. هدفنا هو رؤية أفغانستان يحظى فيها الجميع بفرصة الذهاب إلى المدرسة، والتمتع برعاية صحية جيدة، والحماية من جميع أشكال العنف. يجب على سلطات الأمر الواقع والدول والمانحين والمنظمات الإنسانية العمل معا، لمنع الأزمة الإنسانية من التدهور بشكل أكبر”.
وأشارت /اليونيسف/ إلى أنه بدون اتخاذ إجراءات عاجلة، من المتوقع أن يعاني ما يقدر بمليون طفل في أفغانستان من سوء التغذية الحاد الوخيم خلال هذا العام، وقد يؤدي لوفاتهم. فيما أدى تفشي الحصبة والإسهال المائي الحاد إلى تفاقم الوضع، مما يعرض المزيد من الأطفال للخطر.
