UN Calls for Mine Clearance in Yemen

Aden: The United Nations stressed the importance of clearing landmines in Yemen, after the increasing number of civilian casualties during the last period.

This came in a statement issued today by United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA).

The mission expressed its deep regret over the occurrence of another mine accident yesterday, Wednesday, in Al-Hudaydah governorate, in which a pregnant woman was seriously injured while she was doing her daily work in the village of Al-Masna, located in Al-Hawk District, north of the governorate. It said that this incident stresses the absolute necessity for the relevant parties to return to the negotiating table, and it also highlights the importance of starting to clear mines to protect citizens.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen (OCHA) announced in a statement yesterday that 1,424 civilians have died due to unexploded mines and ordnance left over from war in a number of governorates of Yemen during four years.

OCHA said that the landmines and explosive remnants of war that have plagued Yemen for seven years are still killing and maiming civilians and pose great dangers to aid workers.

عدن: أكدت الأمم المتحدة على أهمية البدء بإزالة الألغام الأرضية باليمن وذلك بعد تزايد أعداد الضحايا من المدنيين خلال الفترة الماضية.

جاء ذلك في بيان أصدرته اليوم بعثة الأمم المتحدة باليمن لدعم اتفاق الحديدة / أونمها/.

وأعربت البعثة عن أسفها البالغ لوقوع حادثة ألغام أخرى أمس/ الأربعاء/ بمحافظة الحديدة، حيث وقعت ضحيتها امرأة حامل تعرضت لإصابة جسيمة بينما كانت تقوم بأعمالها اليومية بقرية /المسنا/ الواقعة بمديرية الحوك شمال المحافظة.

وقالت إن هذه الحادثة تشدد على الضرورة القصوى لرجوع الأطراف ذات الصلة إلى طاولة الحوار، كما أنها تسلط الضوء على أهمية البدء بإزالة الألغام لحماية المواطنين.

وكان مكتب الأمم المتحدة لتنسيق الشؤون الإنسانية باليمن /أوتشا/ أعلن في بيان يوم أمس الأربعاء أن 1424 مدنيا لقوا حتفهم بسبب ألغام وذخائر لم تنفجر من مخلفات الحرب في عدد من محافظات اليمن خلال أربع سنوات.

وقال إن الألغام الأرضية والمتفجرات من مخلفات الحرب التي تعصف باليمن منذ سبعة أعوام لا تزال تتسبب بقتل وتشويه المدنيين وتشكل مخاطر كبيرة على عمال الإغاثة.
