New York: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson underlined the necessity of stopping climate change before it’s too late.
Speaking to the UN General Assembly, Johnson said that the world is irresponsible towards the natural environment.
“We are approaching that critical turning point … when we must show that we are capable of learning, and maturing, and finally taking responsibility for the destruction we are inflicting, not just upon our planet but ourselves,” Johnson told the UN.
“It is time for humanity to grow up,” Johnson said. “It is time for us to listen to the warnings of the scientists … and to understand who we are and what we are doing.”
Johnson said: “Daily, weekly, we are doing such irreversible damage that long before a million years are up, we will have made this beautiful planet effectively uninhabitable not just for us but for many other species.”
He warned: “If we keep on the current track then the temperatures will go up by 2.7 degrees or more by the end of the century,” which Johnson said will cause ” desertification, drought, crop failure, and mass movements of humanity on a scale not seen before.”
The solution is in limiting the rise in temperatures to 1.5 degrees, he said. “We must come together in a collective coming of age. We must show we have the maturity and wisdom to act. And we can.”
Britain, he said, in a generation had reduced 80% dependence on coal for energy to just two percent. By 2024 Britain will not be using coal at all, he said. The world should stop using coal by 2040, Johnson said.
The market for electric vehicles in the UK was growing by two thirds every year and Johnson called for only zero emission vehicles to be sold by 2040.
The UK has committed GBP11.6 billion towards the needed USD100 billion to help the developing world tackle climate change, Johnson said. Much of the rest of this money should come from the private sector, he added.
