Death Toll in Massive Haiti Quake Rises to 1,297

Port-au-Prince: The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Haiti climbed to 1,297.

Haiti’s Civil Protection service said the number of injured people also rose to 5,700. Hospitals were struggling to cope with those who had arrived for care.

The previous toll, which was announced by the Civil Protection service, indicated the death of at least 724 people.

The earthquake struck Haiti on Saturday, 12 kilometers from the city of Saint-Louis-de-Sud, which in turn is 160 kilometers from the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to the American Seismological Center.

The earthquake led to the collapse of churches, shops, homes and buildings, and hundreds of people were trapped under their rubble.

The residents worked to retrieve the wounded trapped under the rubble, in efforts praised by the Civil Defense, stressing that the first interventions allowed many to be pulled out of the rubble.

The few hospitals in the affected areas are making strenuous efforts to provide first aid.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry on Saturday declared a one-month state of emergency for the whole country and said he was rushing aid to areas where towns were destroyed and hospitals were overwhelmed.

وأعلنت سلطات الحماية المدنية اليوم في بيان لها إن حصيلة الجرحى ارتفعت إلى أكثر من 5700، مشيرة إلى أن هناك أشخاصا “كثيرين آخرين تحت الأنقاض”.

وكانت الحماية المدنية أشارت في حصيلة سابقة إلى وجود 724 قتيلا.

ضرب الزلزال هايتي يوم /السبت/ الماضي على بعد نحو 160 كيلومترا عن العاصمة بورت أو برنس، وفق المركز الأمريكي لرصد الزلازل.

وأدى الزلزال إلى انهيار كنائس ومحال ومنازل ومبان .

وعمل السكان على انتشال جرحى عالقين تحت الأنقاض، في جهود أشاد بها الدفاع المدني، مؤكدا أن “عمليات التدخل الأولى أتاحت سحب كثيرين من تحت الأنقاض”.

وتبذل المستشفيات القليلة في المناطق المتضررة جهودا شاقة لتقديم الإسعافات.
