GCO statement in response to The Times allegations
بيان مكتب الاتصال الحكومي رداً على ادعاءات “ذي تايمز”
Doha: Government Communications Office in response to an article published by The Times on 4 June 2021 stated that the article makes serious and baseless claims about Qatar and is predicated on misleading assertions, factual inaccuracies, and bias.
Other media outlets were shown the same falsified information but declined to publish it after determining that it had no factual basis.
Despite Qatar engaging with The Times on these issues, they chose to publish falsehoods, in an apparent abandonment of their journalistic responsibilities.
The author of the article, Andrew Norfolk, has a well-documented history of promoting Islamophobic sentiment and this article is another milestone in that effort. The UK press regulator IPSO previously ruled that he had ‘distorted’ reports about Muslims and the newspaper has also been challenged by a parliamentary committee over Norfolk’s Islamophobic articles. It is concerning that in such polarized times a journalist with such a track record is allowed free reign to publish in the Times.
As has been publicly recognized, Qatar has laws and systems in place to combat and prevent the financing of terrorism and has been recognized as a leader with respect to these efforts. Along with these safeguards, Qatar has championed some of the strictest laws and regulatory framework to combat money laundering. Qatar is absolutely resolute in these comprehensive efforts to ensure that terrorism is not funded anywhere. To that end, Qatar will continue to work with the UK and other international partners to fight global terrorism, undeterred by those who wish to divide us.
الدوحة: أكد مكتب الاتصال الحكومي أن الادعاءات الخطيرة التي ليس لها أساس من الصحة حول دولة قطر والتي تضمنتها المقالة التي نشرتها صحيفة ذي تايمز بتاريخ 4 يونيو الجاري، مبنية على مزاعم مضللة وتشويه للحقائق، ناهيك عن اتسامها بالتحيز.
وقال مكتب الاتصال الحكومي – في بيان – إن أكبر دليل على ذلك هو عدم نشرها في أي وسيلة إعلام حيث حصلت وسائل إعلام أخرى على نفس هذه المعلومات المضللة، إلا أنها ارتأت عدم نشرها بعد التأكد من عدم مصداقيتها.
وأوضح البيان أنه على الرغم من تواصل الجهات المعنية بدولة قطر مع صحيفة ذي تايمز حول هذه القضايا، إلا أن الصحيفة اختارت نشر الأكاذيب، في تخلٍ صريح عن مسؤولياتها ومبادئها الصحفية ومبادئ الموضوعية والنزاهة الإعلامية.
وقال مكتب الاتصال الحكومي: لا يخفى على الجميع أن كاتب المقال، أندرو نورفولك، لديه سجل طويل من الترويج للإسلاموفوبيا وهذه المقالة ليست سوى أحدث محاولاته، وقد سبق وان قضت هيئة المعايير الصحفية المستقلة بأن أندرو نورفولك لديه تقارير “محرفة” حول المسلمين، فضلاً عن تعرض الصحيفة للطعن من قبل لجنة برلمانية في بريطانيا بسبب مقالاته المعادية للإسلام.
وأضاف: من المثير للقلق أن يُسمح لصحفي بمثل سجله المتحيز أن يواصل نشر مقالاته في صحيفة ذي تايمز، لا سيما في مثل هذه الأوقات التي يشهد فيها العالم انقسامات كبيرة.
وأشار مكتب الاتصال الحكومي: لقد سنت دولة قطر قوانين وتشريعات صارمة في إطار جهودها لمكافحة الإرهاب وتجفيف منابع تمويله، وعُرفت دولياً بدورها الحثيث في قيادة هذه الجهود، كما وضعت قطر أحد أكثر القوانين والأطر التنظيمية صرامة لمكافحة غسيل الأموال، وتؤمن بفعالية وشمولية هذه الجهود لضمان مكافحة الإرهاب في أي مكان.
واختتم البيان أنه في إطار التزامها هذا، ستواصل دولة قطر العمل مع المملكة المتحدة ومختلف شركائها الدوليين لمحاربة الإرهاب في مختلف أنحاء العالم بخطى ثابتة ولن تثنيها هذه المحاولات اليائسة لزرع الانقسام بين البلدين.
