Qatar Petroleum launches landmark Sustainability Strategy

Doha: Qatar Petroleum launched its new Sustainability Strategy, which illustrates its commitment and sense of responsibility as a major energy producer, and sets a roadmap for a sustainable and more prosperous future for Qatar and the world.

The new Strategy establishes a number of targets in alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and sets in motion a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. It stipulates deploying dedicated Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities to capture more than 7 million tons per annum of CO 2 in Qatar.

The Strategy also acts as a clear direction towards reducing the emissions intensity of Qatars LNG facilities by 25 percent and of its upstream facilities by at least 15 percent, and reducing flare intensity across upstream facilities by more than 75 percent. Furthermore, it sets out a target to eliminate routine flaring by 2030, and limit fugitive methane emissions along the gas value chain by setting a methane intensity target of 0.2 percent across all facilities by 2025.

Commenting on this occasion, HE the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said, “Qatar Petroleums Sustainability Strategy is a bold commitment with clear goals and milestones that ensure we embed sustainability considerations into the way we plan and manage our entire business and operations.”

“This Strategy is an important step on the road to achieve our vision of becoming one of the best National Oil and Gas Companies in the world, with roots in Qatar and a strong international presence. It will shape our actions and the way we operate over the next decade.” HE added. In highlighting Qatar Petroleums climate action, HE said, “Our climate change mitigation plans are consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement, and provide valuable support to global ambitions to achieve net zero emissions.”

“Qatar is the worlds largest LNG producer and, by implementing our Sustainability Strategy, we will play a decisive role in helping reduce the impact of climate change by implementing measures to curb emissions, produce LNG using the latest proven carbon reduction technologies, and compensating for residual emissions where necessary,” HE concluded.

The Strategy is underpinned by Qatar National Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and bridges the effort to reduce planet-warming emissions while ensuring clean and affordable energy supplies. It stipulates adding more than 4GW of electric power from carbon- free renewable energy to its portfolio in Qatar that would eliminate more than 5 million tons of CO 2 emissions per year.

Anchored on three main pillars: Climate Change Mitigation, Operational Responsibility, and Social and Economic Development, Qatar Petroleums Sustainability Strategy is designed to meet the economic, environmental and social challenges in an increasingly competitive and complex energy landscape.

The Strategy reaffirms Qatar Petroleums commitment to achieving a world- class safety culture that ensures a secure, safe and healthy environment for our employees, stakeholders, partners, contractors, and the communities in which we operate. In addition, Qatar Petroleum is placing significant attention on improving its environmental footprint and enhancing the resilience of biodiversity in Qatar, and the enhancement of local habitats to improve the quality of life.

The Strategy also places emphasis on Qatar Petroleums determination to continue providing access to reliable and affordable energy, while creating significant shared economic value by developing and diversifying local economies. It does so through various initiatives, such as investments in education and technical training in local communities and the flagship “Tawteen” program, a strategic initiative to create and enable local business opportunities in Qatars energy sector supply chain with a focus on the development of local Small and Medium Enterprises.

الدوحة: أطلقت شركة قطر للبترول استراتيجيتها الجديدة للاستدامة، التي تعكس التزامها وشعورها بالمسؤولية كمنتج رئيسي للطاقة، وتشكل خارطة طريق من أجل مستقبل مستدام وأكثر ازدهاراً لدولة قطر وللعالم.

وتحدد الاستراتيجية الجديدة عدة أهداف تتماشى مع أهداف اتفاقية باريس، وتضع موضع التنفيذ خطة للحد من انبعاث غازات الاحتباس الحراري لعام 2030، وتلتزم كذلك بإنشاء مرافق مخصصة لاحتجاز وتخزين الكربون تعمل على التقاط أكثر من 7 ملايين طن سنويا من ثاني أكسيد الكربون في دولة قطر.

كما تشكل الاستراتيجية توجها واضحا نحو خفض كثافة الانبعاثات من مرافق الغاز الطبيعي المسال في قطر بنسبة 25% ومن منشآت التنقيب والإنتاج بنسبة 15% على الأقل، وتقليل نسب حرق الغاز من جميع مرافق التنقيب والإنتاج بأكثر من 75%.. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، تسعى الاستراتيجية لوقف الحرق الروتيني للغاز بحلول العام 2030، والحد من انبعاثات غاز الميثان المتسربة على طول سلسلة إنتاج الغاز من خلال تحديد نسبة 0.2% كهدف لكثافة غاز الميثان من جميع المرافق بحلول العام 2025.

وبهذه المناسبة، قال سعادة المهندس سعد بن شريدة الكعبي وزير الدولة لشؤون الطاقة العضو المنتدب والرئيس التنفيذي لقطر للبترول، إن “استراتيجية قطر للبترول للاستدامة تشكل التزاماً قوياً بأهداف ومعالم واضحة تكفل تضمين اعتبارات الاستدامة في طريقة تخطيطنا وإدارة أعمالنا وعملياتنا”.

وأضاف: “تشكل هذه الاستراتيجية خطوة هامة على طريق تحقيق رؤيتنا بأن نصبح واحدة من أفضل شركات النفط والغاز الوطنية في العالم، بجذور عميقة في قطر وحضور عالمي متميز، وستحدد شكل إجراءاتنا وطريقة عملنا خلال العقد المقبل”.

كما سلط سعادته الضوء على جهود قطر للبترول المتعلقة بالمناخ، قائلا: “إن خططنا للتخفيف من تغير المناخ تسير بموازاة أهداف اتفاقية باريس، وتقدم دعماً قيّماً للطموحات العالمية لتحقيق صافي انبعاثات صفرية”.

واختتم سعادته بالقول: “تعتبر دولة قطر أكبر منتج للغاز الطبيعي المسال في العالم، وبتنفيذ استراتيجيتنا للاستدامة، سنلعب دوراًحاسماً في التخفيف من آثار التغير المناخي من خلال إجراءات للحد من الانبعاثات، وإنتاج الغاز الطبيعي المسال باستخدام أحدث التقنيات المثبتة للحد من الكربون، والتعويض عن الانبعاثات المتبقية عند الضرورة”.

وتستند الاستراتيجية الجديدة لقطر للبترول إلى رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 وأهداف الأمم المتحدة للتنمية المستدامة، وتجسر الجهود المبذولة للحد من انبعاثات الاحتباس الحراري بينما يتم في نفس الوقت ضمان توفير إمدادات طاقة نظيفة وبأسعار معقولة، كما تستهدف إضافة أكثر من 4 جيجاوات من الطاقة الكهربائية من مصادر متجددة وخالية من الكربون إلى محفظة أعمالها في قطر وهو ما سيمنع انبعاث أكثر من 5 ملايين طن من غاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون سنويا.

وبنيت الاستراتيجية على ثلاثة أسس هي: الحد من آثار تغير المناخ، والمسؤولية التشغيلية، والتنمية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وهي معدّة لمواجهة التحديات الاقتصادية والبيئية والاجتماعية في بيئة طاقة تنافسية ومعقدة.

وتؤكد الاستراتيجية التزام قطر للبترول بتبني ثقافة للسلامة ذات مستوى عالمي تضمن بيئة آمنة وصحية لموظفيها وشركائها ومقاوليها والمجتمعات التي تعمل فيها. وكذلك، تعمل قطر للبترول على إيلاء الاهتمام لتحسين بصمتها البيئية وتعزيز مرونة التنوع البيولوجي في دولة قطر، وتطوير البيئة المحلية بهدف تحسين نوعية الحياة.

وتركز الاستراتيجية على التزام قطر للبترول بالاستمرار في تعزيز الوصول إلى طاقة موثوقة وبأسعار معقولة، مع العمل بنفس الوقت على خلق قيمة اقتصادية مشتركة كبيرة من خلال تطوير وتنويع الاقتصادات المحلية، وستقوم بذلك من خلال مبادرات مختلفة مثل الاستثمار في التعليم والتدريب المهني في قطر، وبرنامج /توطين/ الرائد، وهو مبادرة استراتيجية لإنشاء وتمكين فرص للأعمال المحلية في سلسلة التوريد لقطاع الطاقة في قطر مع التركيز على تطوير الشركات الصغيرة والمتوسطة.
