Qatar to Host 4th Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference & Exhibition on February 14

Doha: The 4th Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference & Exhibition (RTS – Doha 2024), organized by the Ministry of Municipality, will begin on Feb. 14 with the participation of a number of governmental and semi-governmental institutions, the private sector, local factories, foreign parties and an elite group of experts and specialists in the field of waste management and treatment.

A press conference held Wednesday on this occasion highlighted the most notable themes and sessions of the two-day conference which include artificial intelligence (AI) and technological means in the field of recycling, the circular economy in the field of recycling, how to market recycled products, recycling in cities, and waste management during crises.

The RTS – Doha 2024 will additionally review successful experiences of countries that have established waste management laws, private sector experiences in the field of recycling and sustainability as well as strategies to avoid sending waste to landfills and the best technological solutions and innovations for treating organic waste.

Speakers underlined during the press conference the importance of the RTS – Doha 2024, coinciding with the International Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha which aims to promote sustainable innovations. They pointed to Qatar’s great interest in waste recycling, reducing its amount, encouraging all segments of society to recycle waste and providing the latest technologies in the field of recycling for relevant companies to adopt.

Director of the General Cleaning Department at the Ministry of Municipality Muqbel Al Shammari said that sustainable development and enhancing social and economic well-being in society are among the most important aspects of Qatar’s strategy that aims to ensure the ability to face challenges, move the country towards the ranks of developed countries by 2030, achieve comprehensive sustainable development, and provide a high-quality life for all its people and future generations, while also giving priority to competitiveness, promoting innovation, and supporting institutional excellence, achieving a balance between sustainable growth and social cohesion based on national results.

Al Shammari explained that the Ministry of Municipality has made great strides in the field of waste management by launching an integrated program for sorting waste from the source in its various stages targeting government and private agencies in Qatar. The General Cleaning Department is launching many initiatives that contribute to accelerating the implementation of the program to contribute to achieving the Qatar National Vision 2030 as well as implementing the strategy of the Ministry of Municipality in the field of public hygiene and successfully implementing the integrated program for sorting waste from the source.

In the same context, Assistant Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department at the Ministry of Municipality (MoM) Hassan Al Nasr said that the Ministry is organizing the ‘4th Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference and Exhibition’, as part of the Ministry’s and Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy to realize the Qatar National Vision (QNV) 2030, as well as in light of the success of the three previous editions.

Al Nasr reminded that the QNV 2030’s objective is for Qatar to be a State capable of sustaining its development and providing a high standard of living for its people by 2030.

The Assistant Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department said that the Conference’s accompanying exhibition will include more than 39 pavilions for government institutions, private sector companies, and factories, in addition to a pavilion for sustainability initiatives started by individuals.

Al Nasr indicated that MoM’s pavilion will highlight the Ministry’s most important accomplishments, in addition to displaying public awareness materials encouraging waste reduction and the use of recycled materials.

The Assistant Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department named some of MoM’s efforts in managing and recycling waste, including its supervision of the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre (DSWMC), its facilities and sanitary landfills, all in accordance with international standards, in addition to developing plans to treat solid waste in a way that ensures public health and safety, including handling the waste resulting from the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023.

In this regard, Al Nasr said that the Waste Management Centre in Mesaieed Industrial Area began its operations in 2011, constituting a qualitative shift in the handling of solid waste, converting it into energy, recyclable materials, and organic fertilizer to support the agricultural sector. He added that the Waste Management Centre is one of the largest specialized waste processing centers in the Middle East, covering an area of 3 km2 and treating 2,300 tonnes of waste daily.

The Assistant Director of the Waste Recycling and Treatment Department said that MoM is further working towards sustainability and resource efficiency through various projects, namely a new sanitary landfill in Mesaieed and a recyclable materials sorting and recovery station in Al Khor.

For her part, the public relations director at MoM Dr. Faiqa Abdullah Ashkanani said that the Conference is a testimony of the Ministry’s commitment and keenness to spread recommended waste management practices, adding that the Conference will highlight the latest technologies and practices in waste management.

Ashkanani said an elite of worldwide specialists will participate in the Conference, noting that Expo 2023 Doha will be a strategic partner to the Conference, materializing further its commitment to sustainability and innovation, in line with the State of Qatar’s commitment to enhance international cooperation towards a more sustainable future for all.

الدوحة: تنطلق في 14 فبراير الجاري، أعمال النسخة الرابعة من مؤتمر ومعرض إعادة التدوير والاستدامة، الذي تنظمه وزارة البلدية تحت شعار “الاستدامة إرثنا للأجيال القادمة”، بمشاركة عدد من المؤسسات الحكومية وشبه الحكومية، والقطاع الخاص والمصانع المحلية وبعض الجهات الخارجية، ونخبة من الخبراء والمتخصصين في مجال إدارة ومعالجة النفايات.

وسلط مؤتمر صحفي، عقد اليوم بهذه المناسبة، الضوء على أهم محاور وجلسات المؤتمر التي تستمر يومين، وهي: الذكاء الاصطناعي والوسائل التكنولوجية في مجال إعادة التدوير، والاقتصاد الدائري في مجال إعادة التدوير، وكيفية تسويق المنتجات المعاد تدويرها، وإعادة التدوير في المدن، وإدارة النفايات خلال الأزمات، مشيرا إلى استعراض تجارب ناجحة لدول وضعت قوانين لإدارة النفايات، وخبرات القطاع الخاص في مجال إعادة التدوير والاستدامة، إلى جانب استراتيجيات تفادي إرسال النفايات إلى المكبات، وأفضل الحلول والابتكارات التكنولوجية لمعالجة النفايات العضوية.

وأبرز المتحدثون، خلال المؤتمر الصحفي، أهمية مؤتمر ومعرض إعادة التدوير والاستدامة 2024 الذي يأتي متزامنا مع تنظيم معرض /إكسبو 2023 الدوحة/ للبستنة الذي يهدف إلى تعزيز الابتكارات المستدامة، لافتين إلى الاهتمام الكبير الذي توليه الدولة لإعادة تدوير النفايات وتقليل كمياتها وإعادة استخدامها، والحرص على تشجيع المجتمع بمختلف فئاته على تدوير النفايات عبر ترسيخ ثقافة الحد منها، وتقديم أحدث التقنيات في مجال إعادة التدوير لتتبناها الشركات المعنية.

وفي هذا الصدد، قال السيد مقبل مظهور الشمري مدير إدارة النظافة العامة بوزارة البلدية، إن التنمية المستدامة وتعزيز الرفاهية الاجتماعية والاقتصادية في المجتمع من أهم مكونات استراتيجية الدولة التي تهدف إلى مواصلة الجاهزية لمواجهة التحديات، وتوجيه قطر نحو الانتقال إلى مصاف الدول المتقدمة بحلول عام 2030، وصولا إلى تحقيق تنمية مستدامة شاملة، وتوفير حياة عالية الجودة لجميع أفراد شعبها وأجياله المقبلة، مع إعطاء الأولوية للتنافسية، وتعزيز الابتكار، ودعم التميز المؤسسي، مع تحقيق التوازن بين النمو المستدام والتماسك الاجتماعي وفق النتائج الوطنية.

وأوضح أن وزارة البلدية قطعت شوطا كبيرا في مجال إدارة النفايات من خلال إطلاق البرنامج المتكامل لفرز النفايات من المصدر بمراحله المختلفة، والذي يستهدف الجهات الحكومية والخاصة بالدولة، حيث تعكف إدارة النظافة العامة بالوزارة على إطلاق العديد من المبادرات التي تساهم في تسريع تطبيق برنامج فرز النفايات من المصدر، وذلك للمساهمة في تحقيق رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030، وتنفيذ استراتيجية وزارة البلدية في مجال النظافة العامة، وإنجاح تطبيق البرنامج المتكامل لفرز المخلفات من المصدر.

وفي ذات السياق، قال السيد حسن النصر مساعد مدير إدارة تدوير ومعالجة النفايات بوزارة البلدية، إن الوزارة تنظم النسخة الرابعة من مؤتمر ومعرض إعادة التدوير والاستدامة هذا العام بعد النجاح الذي حققه المؤتمر في ثلاث نسخ سابقة، وذلك تماشيا مع الخطة الاستراتيجية لوزارة البلدية، واستراتيجية التنمية الوطنية الثالثة تحقيقا لرؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 التي تهدف إلى تحويل قطر إلى دولة متقدمة قادرة على تحقيق التنمية المستدامة وعلى تأمين استمرار العيش الكريم لشعبها جيلا بعد جيل، من خلال تعزيز الاستثمار الأمثل للموارد الطبيعية واستدامتها لشعب قطر.

كما نوه إلى أنه سيتم تنظيم معرض مصاحب يضم أكثر من 39 جناحا للمؤسسات الحكومية وشركات ومصانع القطاع الخاص، وأصحاب المبادرات الخاصة بالاستدامة، موضحا أن جناح الوزارة في المعرض سيعرض أهم الإنجازات التي حققتها، بالإضافة إلى عرض فيديوهات توعوية لتشجيع الأفراد والشركات على التقليل من النفايات واستخدام المواد المعاد تدويرها.

وتطرق النصر لجهود وزارة البلدية في إدارة وتدوير النفايات، مشيرا إلى بعض الإنجازات الوطنية في هذا المجال، بما في ذلك: إشراف الوزارة على مصنع معالجة النفايات الصلبة ومحطات الترحيل التابعة له والمطامير الصحية للنفايات وإعادة تدويرها، وذلك طبقا للمواصفات والمعايير الدولية، بالإضافة إلى وضع الخطط الإدارية اللازمة لمعالجة النفايات الصلبة بما يكفل الحفاظ على الصحة والسلامة العامة، إلى جانب وضع خطة شاملة للتخلص الآمن من نفايات ملاعب بطولة كأس آسيا الجارية حاليا بالدولة.

ولفت مساعد مدير إدارة تدوير ومعالجة النفايات بوزارة البلدية، في هذا الصدد، إلى نجاح مركز معالجة النفايات الصلبة بمسيعيد الذي بدأ العمل في 2011، في إحداث نقلة نوعية في مجال تحويل النفايات الصلبة إلى طاقة ومواد قابلة للتدوير بإنتاج سماد عضوي لدعم القطاع الزراعي، باعتباره من أكبر المراكز المتخصصة في المعالجة بمنطقة الشرق الأوسط، حيث تبلغ مساحته 3 كلم بطاقة استيعابية تصل 2300 طن في اليوم.

وأكد أن وزارة البلدية تواصل جهودها لتعزيز الاستدامة والاستخدام الأمثل للموارد في مجموعة من المشاريع المستقبلية، حيث يتم حاليا إنشاء مطمر صحي وهندسي جديد في منطقة مسيعيد لاستقبال وطمر النفايات وفقا لأعلى المعايير الهندسية والبيئية لتلبية متطلبات الطمر الصحي للنفايات في دولة قطر على المدى البعيد، إلى جانب تدشين محطة فرز واستعادة المواد القابلة للتدوير في الخور والتي ستشكل نقطة تحول في مجال فرز النفايات وإعادة تدويرها.

من جهتها، قالت الدكتورة فايقة عبدالله أشكناني مدير إدارة العلاقات العامة بوزارة البلدية، إن عقد المؤتمر يؤكد حرص الوزارة والتزامها بالحث على تبني ممارسات سليمة لإدارة النفايات، حيث يلقي الضوء على أحدث الطرق المتبعة لإدارة النفايات، ويعزز الوعي بأهمية هذه الممارسات المستدامة، موضحة أن المؤتمر يتضمن عددا من ورش العمل والندوات والمحاضرات ستقدمها نخبة من المتخصصين المحليين والإقليميين والدوليين، بهدف تبادل الخبرات ومشاركة الأفكار وتجارب الشركات في مجال إدارة النفايات وإعادة التدوير، مشيرة إلى أن من بين الجهات المشاركة في الحدث إكسبو 2023 الدوحة للبستنة كشريك استراتيجي، معتبرة أن مشاركته في المؤتمر كراع استراتيجي تدل على التزامه بالاستدامة وتعزيز الابتكار المستدام في جميع المجالات، بالإضافة إلى التزام دولة قطر بتعزيز التعاون الدولي وإيجاد مسار مشترك نحو مستقبل أكثر استدامة للجميع.
