Colin Powell: Trump is “drifting” away from the constitution and has become a threat to our democracy

Colin Powell on Sunday became the latest notable Republican or former military leader to express concern about President Donald Trump, saying he’ll vote for Joe Biden in November instead.

The former secretary of State said that by threatening last week to use active-duty U.S. troops against protesters, Trump showed he has “drifted away” from the U.S. Constitution.

“He is now the candidate, and I’ll be voting for him,” Powell, perhaps the most prominent black Republican in the U.S., said of Biden on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

Powell, 83, was the top diplomat under Republican President George W. Bush and before that served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as National Security Adviser.

He joins a number of prominent retired military officials as well as current and former lawmakers to criticize Trump, although not all have said they’ll vote for Biden. Powell has also said he didn’t vote for Trump in 2016.

انتقد كولن باول الجنرال البارز ووزير الخارجية الأمريكي الأسبق بشدة الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب لما وصفه بالأكاذيب المتكررة من البيت الأبيض وقال إنه سيصوت لمرشح الحزب الديمقراطي جو بايدن في الانتخابات الرئاسية في نوفمبر .

وقال باول، الذي ينتمي إلى الحزب الجمهوري، اليوم الأحد، إن ترامب “ينجرف” بعيدا عن الدستور وأصبح “خطرا على ديمقراطيتنا، خطرا على بلادنا”.

وحث باول المواطنين الأمريكيين على عدم التصويت بناء على الاقتصاد، وهي نقطة قوة نسبية لترامب، ولكن على المصلحة الإجمالية للبلاد.

وعلى الرغم من أن باول، الذي خدم في البيت الأبيض لمدة ثلاث ولايات مع الجمهوريين، لم يصوت في انتخابات 2016 لصالح ترامب، إلا أن انتقاداته للرئيس الحالي أصبحت أكثر حدة، حيث اتهم ترامب بالسعي لتقسيم الأمة .

وأضاف باول لشبكة “سي ان ان” الإخبارية الأمريكية “إنه يكذب بشأن أمور ويفلت بفعلته لأن الناس لن يحاسبوه “، معربا عن شعوره بتفاقم المشكلة بسبب الجمهوريين في الكونجرس الذين تجاهلوا فى الغالب سلوك الرئيس.
