Is Coronavirus fragmenting the Eurozone? More than half of Italians want to leave the EU

International reports predicting that Britain will not be the last to leave the European bloc are not mere speculations far from reality, as the Coronavirus crisis revealed the bitterness and questions of the Italians about the feasibility of the union that abandoned Rome in its crisis.
According to AFP, Italy has seen a rise in the proportion of eurosceptics, in a sense of the lack of European solidarity during the recent migration crises and the worsening situation with the Coronavirus epidemic.
According to opinion polls conducted in April, 71% of Italians believe that Coronavirus is undermining the EU and about 55% approve of leaving the EU and/or Eurozone.
These ratios are significant in a country that is one of the pillars of the Union and has historically embraced European integration.
Rome accuses some of its partners, particularly Germany and the Netherlands, of being selfish for refusing to share debt by issuing “Corona bonds” and “Euro Bond”, which Italy wants, as this issue has become an internal political bet.
The Italian economy is suffering greatly from this crisis. The IMF expects the country’s GDP to decline – 9.1% this year.
Italy’s skeptic euro-right parties, which are calling for the strengthening of Italian sovereignty, have benefited from German and Dutch objections to the issuance of “Corona Bonds” to cope with the fallout from the epidemic.
Georgia Meloni, head of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, which won 13.5 percent of the vote, said Friday that the government “has no clear idea of its negotiating power, because we are the ones who are currently deciding whether Europe exists.”
“Everyone knows that there will be no Europe without Britain and Italy, because only a great Germany will crush everyone, even France,” she said.
The leader of the League Party, Matteo Salvini, has the same view. Although his star fell out after leaving the government in August 2019, his party still leads by 28.5%. Salvini accuses Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte of wanting to sell Italy “cheaply”.
The controversy is particularly focused on next week’s European Council meeting, which will discuss the enactment of joint economic measures to address the repercussions of the crisis.

يبدو أن التقارير الدولية التي تتوقع بأن بريطانيا لن تكون آخر من يغادر الكتلة الأوروبية ليست مجرد تخمينات بعيدة عن الواقع، إذ كشفت أزمة كورونا عما يشعر به الإيطاليون من مرارة وأسئلتهم حول جدوى الاتحاد الذي تخلى عن روما في أزمتها .
وحسب وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية، شهدت إيطاليا ارتفاعا في نسبة المشككين في جدوى الاتحاد الأوروبي، في شعور نجم عن غياب التضامن الأوروبي خلال أزمات الهجرة الأخيرة وتفاقم الوضع مع تفشي وباء كورونا.
وأفادت نتائج استطلاعات للرأي أجريت في أبريل الجاري، بأن 71% من الإيطاليين يعتقدون أن كورونا يقوض الاتحاد الأوروبي ونحو 55% موافقون على الخروج من الاتحاد (و/أو) منطقة اليورو.
وتعد هذه النسب كبيرة في بلد يمثل إحدى ركائز الاتحاد ويتبنى تاريخيا التكامل الأوروبي.
وتتهم روما بعض شركائها وخصوصا ألمانيا وهولندا، بالأنانية لرفضهم تشارك الديون عبر إصدار “سندات كورونا” و”سندات أوروبية” (يورو بوند)، وهو ما ترغب به إيطاليا، حيث أصبحت هذه المسألة رهانا سياسيا داخليا.
ويعاني الاقتصاد الإيطالي بشدة من هذه الأزمة. ويتوقع صندوق النقد الدولي أن يتراجع إجمالي الناتج الداخلي للبلد – 9.1 % هذا العام.
واستفادت أحزاب أقصى اليمين الإيطالية المشككة في أوروبا والداعية إلى تعزيز السيادة الإيطالية، من الاعتراض الألماني والهولندي على إصدار “سندات كورونا” لمواجهة تداعيات الوباء.
وفي هذا السياق، قالت جورجيا ميلوني رئيسة حزب “إخوة إيطاليا” اليميني المتشدد الذي حصل على 13.5% من نوايا التصويت، الجمعة، إن الحكومة “ليست لديها فكرة واضحة عن قوتها التفاوضية، لأننا نحن الذين نقرر حاليا ما إذا كانت أوروبا موجودة”.
وأضافت أن “الجميع يدركون أنه لن يكون هناك أوروبا بدون بريطانيا وإيطاليا، إذ لن تبقى حينها سوى ألمانيا كبرى ستسحق الجميع حتى فرنسا”.
ويتبنى زعيم “حزب الرابطة” ماتيو سالفيني نفس الرأي. ورغم أفول نجمه بعد مغادرته الحكومة في أغسطس 2019، لا يزال حزبه يتصدر نوايا التصويت بنحو 28.5%. ويتهم سالفيني رئيس الحكومة جوزيبي كونتي بأنه يريد بيع إيطاليا “بثمن بخس”.
ويتركز الجدل بصفة خاصة على اجتماع المجلس الأوروبي الأسبوع القادم الذي يناقش سن تدابير اقتصادية مشتركة لمواجهة تداعيات الأزمة.
