The ‘Carlos Ghosn challenge’ spreading on Japanese social media

There’s a new Internet challenge in Japan: people are squeezing themselves into musical instrument cases or hiding inside cardboard boxes, imitating former Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Japan. Over the last few days, Japanese Internet users have been posting photos of themselves contorting into guitar cases as part of the ‘Carlos Ghosn challenge’.
Ghosn had been detained since November 2018 in Japan on charges of financial misconduct. He managed to escape – in a manner reminiscent of a Hollywood caper – and turn up in Lebanon on New Year’s Eve, much to the astonishment of the Japanese justice system and even his own legal team.
Rumours spread online – according to the BBC, originally started by Lebanese broadcaster MTV Lebanon – that Ghosn had escaped by hiding in a musical instrument case and was smuggled out by a group of people masquerading as musicians. The Wall Street Journal said that he had escaped in a trunk used for audio equipment. His wife told news agency Reuters that that version of events was “fiction”.

It’s not just people online, though: TV hosts and radio commentators have also got in on the fun. In this photo, the famous entertainment journalist Masaki Omura tests out the comfort factor of a trunk for equipment.

لا يزال صدى حادثة هروب كارلوس غصن -رئيس تحالف (رينو- نيسان) السابق الشهر الماضي يثير جدلاً واسعاً داخل المجتمع الياباني، حتى تحول إلى تحدٍ عبر وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي.
وعلى مدار الأيام الماضية، ضجت وسائل التواصل بأناس يختبئون داخل صناديق من الورق المقوى أو حقائب آلات موسيقية، مقلدين الطريقة ذاتها التي ترددت أنباء بأن غصن هرب بها من اليابان، حسبما أورد موقع «الحرة».
واحتجزت السلطات اليابانية قطب السيارات اللبناني الأصل كارلوس غصن منذ نوفمبر 2018 بتهمة سوء السلوك المالي، لكنه تمكن من الفرار بطريقة تشبه مغامرات هوليوود، ما أثار دهشة النظام القضائي الياباني، وحتى فريقه القانوني.
وهناك تكنهات بأن غصن هرب من خلال الاختباء في صندوق للآلات الموسيقية، بمساعدة أناس تنكروا كموسيقيين.
وقالت صحيفة «وول ستريت جورنال» إنه هرب في صندوق يستخدم لأجهزة الصوت الموسيقية بها ثقوب تسمح بالتنفس، بينما أبلغت زوجته وكالة «رويترز» بأن تلك الرواية «خيالية».
ولم يقتصر الجدل الدائر حول طريقة هروب كارلوس غصن على الأناس العاديين من رواد التواصل، بل امتد ليشمل مضيفي البرامج التلفزيونية والإذاعية.
كما انتشرت ملصقات مازحة على حقائب السفر في اليابان، كتب على بعضها «كارلوس غصن ليس بالداخل»!
ودفع تحدي كارلوس غصن شركة ياماها إلى إصدار تحذير، قالت فيه: «تم تصميم حقائب الآلات الموسيقية وأجهزة الصوت للآلات الموسيقية والمعدات الصوتية، يرجى استخدامها بشكل صحيح»، وشددت على أنها أصدرت هذا الإعلان لمنع أي حوادث مؤسفة قبل فوات الأوان.
