Trump says Iran ‘very wise’ not to shoot down manned spy plane

Donald Trump said Iran had been “very wise” not to attack a manned American spy plane when it shot down a US Navy drone on Thursday — a move that brought the nations to the brink of military conflict.

On Friday — the day after Iran shot down the US navy surveillance drone — an Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander said an American P-8 spy plane, a Boeing aircraft used for surveillance, had been flying close to the drone but that Iran had only shot down the unmanned drone and not targeted the manned aircraft.

“There was a plane with 38 people yesterday, did you see that? I think that’s a big story,” the US president told reporters on Saturday as he departed the White House for Camp David where he is set to meet his military advisers.

“They had it in their sights and they didn’t shoot it down,” Mr Trump added. “I think they were very wise not to do that. And we appreciate that they didn’t do that. I think that was a very wise decision.”

Mr Trump ordered strikes on three Iranian targets in response to the shooting down of the drone, but he reversed course shortly before the Pentagon was about to conduct the attack.

Mr Trump on Friday said he aborted the mission after he was told that the strikes could result in the deaths of 150 Iranians. In tweets and an interview with NBC News, the US president said such a response was disproportionate to an Iranian attack on a surveillance aircraft that did not have a human crew.

US media outlets reported on Saturday that the US did carry out a cyber attack on Iran, however, on Thursday, in that case targeted against computers controlling rocket and missile systems.

Mr Trump also said on Saturday that he was poised to put more sanctions on Iran.

“Iran cannot have Nuclear Weapons! Under the terrible Obama plan, they would have been on their way to Nuclear in a short number of years, and existing verification is not acceptable,” the president tweeted. “We are putting major additional Sanctions on Iran on Monday. I look forward to the day that…..Sanctions come off Iran, and they become a productive and prosperous nation again.”

A general in Iran’s elite revolutionary guard on Sunday called for the US administration to refrain from making mistakes in the region and “not to put the lives of its forces at risk”. Major General Gholam Ali Rashid added any conflict risked drawing in other countries in the region.

Iran has become more defiant against US threats in recent weeks after feeling emboldened by its ability to resist pressure from Washington, Iranian experts say.

Mr Trump said he retained confidence in John Bolton, his national security adviser who backed the strikes on Iran and, before entering the administration, called for regime change in Iran. One US official said there had been “complete unanimity” among civilian and military advisers over the appropriate response to the drone attack.

“I have John Bolton, who I would definitely say is a hawk. I have other people that are on the other side of the equation,” he said. “Ultimately I make the decision. The only one that matters is me. I listen to everybody. I want people on both sides.”

Mr Trump repeated his view from Friday that the US had “plenty of time” to deal with Tehran. “Iran wants to become a wealthy nation again. Let’s make Iran great again. Does that make sense? Make Iran great again, OK with me. But they’re never gonna do it if they think in five or six years they gotta have a nuclear weapon.”

The call for patience underscored the pressure on Mr Trump, who is caught between calls for the US to take a tough response to an attack and his reluctance to get drawn into military conflicts. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr Trump criticised his predecessors for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

“I don’t want to kill 150 Iranians,” Mr Trump said. “I don’t want to kill 150 of anything or anybody, unless it’s absolutely necessary.”

A UK foreign minister will travel to Iran on Sunday for talks to urge de-escalation, and the US has requested that the UN hold an emergency meeting on the crisis on Monday afternoon in New York.

Mr Trump told Tehran it would have a bright future if the country agreed to abandon a push for nuclear weapons — even though international nuclear inspectors have until now certified that Iran has complied with the terms of the 2015 nuclear accord. Mr Trump pulled the US out of the multilateral deal last year in a move that critics say prompted the recent crisis in the Gulf.

أكد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب ان عدم إسقاط إيران الطائرة التي اقتحمت مجالها الجوي وعلى متنها 38 شخصا قرار حكيم ونحن نثمنه.

ونوه الرئيس ترامب برغبة بلاده في تجنب المواجهة مع ايران.

وقال في تصريح له امس، بثه راديو سوا “إنه في حال تخلى الإيرانيون عن برنامجهم النووي فإنه سيكون أفضل أصدقائهم”.

وتابع “لن نسمح لإيران بحيازة سلاح نووي وحين يقبلون بذلك، سيكون لديهم بلد غني، وسيكونون سعداء جدا وسأكون أفضل أصدقائهم. آمل أن يحدث ذلك”.

أضاف أنه مستعد للتوصل سريعا إلى اتفاق مع إيران وقال إنه سيدعم اقتصادها المتعثر.

وقال إن الاتفاق سيكون تحت شعار “دعنا نجعل إيران عظيمة مجددا”.

وكتب لاحقا على تويتر من كامب ديفيد “سنفرض عقوبات إضافية كبيرة على إيران يوم الاثنين. اتطلع إلى اليوم الذي تُرفع فيه العقوبات عن إيران، وتصبح أمة منتجة ومزدهرة مجددا”.

وأضاف ” لكن إذا تصرف المسؤولون الإيرانيون بشكل سيئ، فإنهم سيمرون بفترة بالغة السوء”.

وتابع “نأمل أن يكونوا أذكياء.. وإذا تمكنا من إعادة إيران إلى سكة إعادة الإعمار الاقتصادي، سيكون ذلك أمرا رائعا”.

بيد أنه في الانتظار “سنواصل ونفرض عقوبات إضافية”.

وأوضح أنه لم يتقرر أي شيء حتى الآن بشأن إيران، مشيرا إلى أنه محاط بمستشارين يدلون بوجهات نظر متباينة جدا.

وأردف أنه إذا كان مستشار الأمن القومي جون بولتون من “الصقور” وكثيرا ما يدافع عن “سياسة متشددة”، فإن آخرين “يتبنون سياسة أخرى” و”الوحيد الذي سيتحمل (المسؤولية) هو أنا”.

وكان الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب قد قال الجمعة إنه قرر وقف ضربة عسكرية ردا على إسقاط إيران طائرة مسيرة أمريكية، “حفاظا على أرواح المدنيين ولأن الهجوم لا يتناسب مع الاعتداء”.

حزم إيراني

ونقلت وكالة تسنيم للأنباء عن عباس موسوي المتحدث باسم وزارة الخارجية قوله “بغض النظر عن أي قرار يتخذه (المسؤولون الأمريكيون)… لن نسمح بأي انتهاك لحدود إيران. ستواجه إيران بحزم أي عدوان أو تهديد أمريكي”.

وتحدث قائد كبير في الحرس الثوري الإيراني بنبرة متحدية مشابهة وذلك في تعليقات نقلتها وكالة الجمهورية الإسلامية للأنباء.

وقال قائد القوة الجوفضائية بالحرس الثوري البريجادير جنرال أمير علي حاجي زادة “إذا تكرر الانتهاك فسيتكرر ردنا أيضا… من المحتمل أن هذا التعدي من الأمريكيين نفذه جنرال أو بعض العناصر”.

ونشر وزير الخارجية الإيراني محمد جواد ظريف خريطة على تويتر امس مزودة بإحداثيات مفصلة قال إنها تظهر الطائرة الأمريكية المسيرة التي أسقطتها إيران الخميس وهي تحلق فوق المياه الإقليمية للجمهورية الإسلامية.

احتجاج

وذكرت وكالة فارس للأنباء أن وزارة الخارجية الإيرانية استدعت القائم بالأعمال الإماراتي امس للاحتجاج على سماح بلاده للطائرة المسيرة بالانطلاق من قاعدة عسكرية أمريكية على أراضيها.

وعلى صعيد آخر قالت مصادر عسكرية لرويترز إن القوات الأمريكية تُعد لإجلاء متعاقدين من قاعدة عسكرية عراقية لوجود “تهديدات أمنية محتملة” وذلك دون توضيح طبيعة التهديدات. ونفى متحدثان من الجيشين الأمريكي والعراقي امس صحة ذلك.

تغيير مسار الرحلات

فيما دعت المستشارة الألمانية أنجيلا ميركل امس إلى التوصل لحل سياسي للأزمة. وأضافت “هذا ما نعكف عليه”.

وقالت وزارة الخارجية البريطانية إن أندرو موريسون وزير شؤون الشرق الأوسط في الخارجية سيزور إيران اليوم وسيعبر عن المخاوف إزاء “سلوك إيران في المنطقة وتهديدها بأنها ستتوقف عن الالتزام بالاتفاق النووي”.

وتهدد إيران بتقليص التزاماتها وفق الاتفاق النووي إذا فشلت الأطراف الأوروبية الموقعة عليه في إنقاذه بحماية طهران من العقوبات الأمريكية.

وقال موسوي “لن نمنح الأوربيين وقتا إضافيا بعد يوم 8 يوليو لإنقاذ الاتفاق” مشيرا إلى نهاية مهلة ستين يوما أعلنتها طهران في مايو أيار.

وأصدرت إدارة الطيران الاتحادية الأمريكية الخميس أمرا طارئا يحظر على شركات الطيران الأمريكية التحليق في المجال الجوي الإيراني فوق مضيق هرمز وخليج عُمان.

واتخذت بعض شركات الطيران العالمية الأخرى تدابير وقائية.

لكن وكالة تسنيم ذكرت أن إيران قالت امس إن مجالها الجوي “آمن تماما” أمام جميع الطائرات.

في سياق منفصل، ذكرت وكالة الأنباء والتلفزيون الإيرانية امس إن إيران أعدمت متعاقدا سابقا في المنظمة الجوفضائية بوزارة الدفاع بتهمة التجسس لحساب المخابرات المركزية الأمريكية (سي.آي.إيه).

وأضافت الوكالة ان جلال حاجي زوار ترك وظيفته قبل تسع سنوات وأدانته محكمة عسكرية بعد تحقيق كشف عن وثائق ومعدات للتجسس في منزله.
