Canada will continue to “speak firmly and clearly” about human rights (Trudeau)
ترودو يؤكد: سنواصل “الكلام بحزم وبوضوح” عن حقوق الإنسان
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that his country would continue to “speak firmly and clearly” about human rights, implicitly refusing to apologize to Saudi Arabia.
“Canadians expect our government to speak firmly, clearly, and politely about the need to respect human rights, at home and around the world, and we will continue to do so,” M said. Trudeau, questioned at a press briefing on whether he expected to apologize to Ryad
million. Trudeau reacted for the first time to the announcement on Monday of the expulsion for “interference” by the Canadian ambassador in Ryad.
“We do not want to have bad relations with Saudi Arabia,” he added immediately. “It is a country that still has some importance in the world and is making progress on human rights but we will still continue to highlight the difficulties when they exist and around the world.”
The prime minister said that “talks with Saudi Arabia are continuing”. The head of Canadian diplomacy Chrystia Freeland held talks with her Saudi counterpart Adel al-Jubeir on Tuesday, according to him.
On Monday, the Saudi kingdom expelled the Canadian ambassador and recalled his ambassador while freezing any new trade or investment with that country after the denunciation by Ottawa of the arrest of Saudi human rights activists.
On Wednesday, al-Jubeir rejected any possibility of mediation and felt that Canada had made “a big mistake”. “An error should be corrected. Canada knows what to do, “he added.
The head of Saudi diplomacy said his country was considering “additional measures” against Canada, without providing further details.
