Amsterdam: A new study has shown promising results for the treatment of atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeats using light that can penetrate the chest and modify the activity of heart cells.
Current treatment for atrial fibrillation relies on shocks and medications, both of which have serious side effects and low success rates, according to “Medical Express.”
The treatment, which was tested on animal models, is unique in that it is shock-free and medication-free, using light-sensitive proteins to control the activity of targeted cells to restore the heart’s regular rhythm instantly.
The study was conducted at the Medical Center of Leiden University in the Netherlands, and Dr. Daniel A. Pijnappels said, “The animals’ chests were illuminated in the experiment, leading to a sharp restoration of the regular rhythm of the heartbeat. This indicates that sufficient light can penetrate the chest wall, and full penetration of the human atrial wall may also be possible.”
This treatment allows for a rapid restoration of the heart’s rhythm and requires human trials to be conducted.

وأجريت تجارب الدراسة في المركز الطبي بجامعة ليدن بهولندا، وقال الدكتور دانييل أ. بيجنابلز: “أضيئت صدور الحيوانات في التجربة، مما أدى إلى استعادة حادة لإيقاع تنظيم ضربات القلب، ويوضح ذلك أن الضوء الكافي اخترق جدار الصدر، وأن الاختراق الكامل لجدار الأذين البشري قد يكون ممكنا أيضا”.
ويسمح هذا العلاج باستعادة سريعة لإيقاع ضربات القلب، ويتطلب تطبيقه إجراء تجارب على البشر.
