Researchers Identify Genetic Mutations Correlated to Coronary Heart Disease

Beijing: Chinese researchers have identified a group of genetic mutations associated with a higher risk of coronary heart disease.
In a cohort study of 6,181 Chinese individuals, researchers from Fuwai Hospital, affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, found that clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), that is, the presence of a type of stem cell resulting from leukemia causing mutations, was associated with a 42% increased risk of coronary heart disease in 1,100 CHIP carriers compared to those without CHIP.
The results of the study, which were published in JAMA Cardiology, stated that the increased risk of coronary heart disease attributed to these mutations was not negligible.
The findings will enhance early prediction, personalized prevention and treatment of coronary heart disease, the researchers said.
