Scientists Reveal Device That Controls Chronic Head Pain

Washington: Scientists from San Francisco’s University of California have uncovered a device that can release signals into the brain that can control chronic head pain.
In the study, scientists used a defibrillator-like device that was surgically placed inside the brains of patients who have been in constant pain for more than a year, and successfully found evidence of where chronic pain was present and controlled in the brain.
The study, published in the scientific journal ‘Nature Neuroscience’ showed that the pain was associated with electrical fluctuations in the orbital frontal cortex, an area involved in emotion management, self-assessment and decision-making.
According to the study, about one in five American adults suffers from chronic pain. It is a constant or repeated pain lasting for more than three months. To measure this pain, doctors usually rely on patients to assess their pain by using either a digital scale or a visual scale based on symbols. However, self-reported pain metrics are subjective and can vary throughout the day, and some patients, such as children or persons with disabilities, may suffer in order to communicate accurately or record their pain.
Scientists stated that this study is considered a major step in the pain management field, to develop more objective signs of pain that can be used alongside self-reports, in addition to enhancing the understanding of neurological mechanisms behind pain, and these signs can help to verify the pain experienced by some patients.
Such patterns of brain activity can serve as vital indicators to guide the diagnosis and treatment of millions of people with chronic pain or burning associated with a damaged nervous system, they added.
Scientists hope to alleviate patients’ ongoing pain by sending pulses through electrodes to correct any abnormal activity in the brain.
