Qatar Charity Provides Relief Aid to Flood Victims in Somalia

Mogadishu: Qatar Charity (QC) has begun providing urgent relief to the residents of Beledweyne city, the capital of Hiran region in the Hirshabelle state of Somalia, which was badly affected by a major flood.
Local officials and those concerned with relief affairs in Somalia expressed their appreciation to QC, which was the first humanitarian organization to deliver the relief aid to the affected.

QC’s relief aid includes providing safe drinking water daily to 652 displaced families. In the coming days, it will launch mobile clinics to provide health services, distribute personal hygiene kits, and build toilets.

Director of Qatar Charity’s Somalia office, Abdulfatah Adam, said that QC’s field teams arrived in the field to assess the humanitarian situation in the city and the conditions of displacement camps outside it, in addition to distributing potable water. He added the initial assessment of the situation showed the urgent need for clean water. He pointed out that QC’s response will include all necessary sectors to help those affected so that they can return safely to their homes.

For his part, Commissioner of Somali Disaster Management Agency-SoDMA, Mahamuud Moallim, said, “We thank Qatar Charity, which made us happy with its urgent intervention to help the affected in Beledweyne.

We have worked with it in more than one place in Somalia, and today it is implementing relief projects.” Beledweyne Mayor Nadar Tabah Maalin said, “We will do everything we can to deal with the repercussions of the floods, Our city has been plagued by floods, despite all the efforts that have been made to prevent the water from reaching the city’s residents, but its level was more than expected and many dams and barriers were built.” She added that QC, as usual, was the first humanitarian institution to provide much needed services to the displaced, thanking the State of Qatar and QC for helping the flood victims and the deprived.

It is worth noting that the flood waters inundated vast areas along the river, which led to the displacement of 90% of the population of Beledweyne (nearly 250,000 families), according to SoDMA.

The floods caused massive damage to health clinics, schools, and sanitation facilities, and affected markets and food stores, leaving the population in dire need of emergency shelter, food, water, and sanitation.

مقديشيو: شرعت قطر الخيرية في تقديم إغاثة عاجلة لسكان مدينة بلدوين حاضرة إقليم هيران التابعة لولاية هرشبيلي الصومالية والتي تعرضت لكارثة فيضانات كبيرة.

وأعرب مسؤولون محليون ومعنيون بشؤون الإغاثة في الصومال عن تقديرهم لقطر الخيرية التي كانت أول مؤسسة إنسانية تصل الميدان وتقدم المساعدات للمتضررين.

وتشتمل حزمة المساعدات الإغاثية لقطر الخيرية على تقديم المياه الصالحة للشرب بشكل يومي لـ 652 أسرة من الأسر النازحة، والتي تعتبر من الأولويات القصوى للنازحين، كما ستطلق في الأيام المقبلة عيادات متنقلة لتقديم الخدمات الصحية، وستقوم بتوزيع أدوات النظافة الشخصية، وبناء دورات المياه.

وقال السيد عبد الفتاح آدم معلم، مدير مكتب قطر الخيرية في الصومال” إن فرق قطر الخيرية الميدانية وصلت إلى الميدان لتقييم الوضع الإنساني في المدينة وأوضاع مخيمات النزوح خارجها، بالإضافة إلى توزيع المياه الصالحة للشرب، حيث إن التقييم الأولي لوضع تجمعات النازحين أظهر الحاجة الماسة للمياه النقية” وأشار إلى أن استجابة قطر الخيرية ستشمل جميع القطاعات الضرورية لمساعدة المتضررين حتى يتمكنوا من الرجوع سالمين إلى منازلهم.

من جهته قال السيد محمود معلم عبدله رئيس هيئة إدارة الكوارث الصومالية:” نشكر قطر الخيرية التي أسعدتنا بتدخلها العاجل لمساعدة المتضررين في مدينة بلدوين المنكوبة، وهذا ليس بغريب عليها فهي سباقة لنجدة المنكوبين، وقد عملنا معها في أكثر من مكان في الصومال، واليوم تقدم مشاريع إغاثية في بلدوين، أولاها إيصال المياه الصالحة للشرب، ومشاريع في قطاعات الإصحاح والصحة وغيرها”.

وقالت السيدة ندر تمان مالن، عمدة مدينة بلدوين:” ابتليت مدينتنا بالفيضانات رغم كل الجهود التي بذلت لمنع وصول المياه إلى سكان المدينة لكن منسوبها كان أكثر من المتوقع وتخطى بناء العديد من السدود والحواجز، وسنبذل كل ما نستطيع لمعالجة تداعيات الفيضانات”.

وأضافت أن قطر الخيرية كعادتها أول مؤسسة إنسانية تصل في الميدان وتقدم خدمات كان النازحون بأشد الحاجة إليها، وهو موقف لا ينسى لها “.

وأعربت عن بالغ شكرها وامتنانها لدولة قطر شعبا وحكومة، ولقطر الخيرية على المواقف الإنسانية وتقديمهم العون والمساعدة للمحتاجين والمتضررين، ومشاركتهم ببناء البنية التحتية للدولة الصومالية.
