WHO: 1 in 6 People Globally Affected by Infertility

Geneva: Large numbers of people are affected by infertility in their lifetime, according to a new report published Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Around 17.5% of the adult population roughly 1 in 6 worldwide experience infertility, showing the urgent need to increase access to affordable, high-quality fertility care for those in need.

“Globally, an estimated one out of every six people are affected by the inability to have a child at some point in their life. This is regardless of where they live and what resources they have,” WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“The report reveals an important truth: infertility does not discriminate,” said Dr. Ghebreyesus, adding that despite the magnitude of the issue, solutions for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infertility including assisted reproductive technology remain underfunded and inaccessible to many due to high costs.

This report provides insight into global and regional infertility prevalence by analyzing all relevant studies from 1990 to 2021, taking into account different estimation approaches used.

The new estimates show limited variation in the prevalence of infertility between regions. The rates are comparable for high-, middle- and low-income countries, indicating that this is a major health challenge globally.

Lifetime prevalence was 17.8% in high-income countries and 16.5% in low- and middle-income countries.

الدوحة: أفادت منظمة الصحة العالمية بأن شخصا من كل ستة أشخاص في العالم مصاب بالعقم، مما يؤكد الحاجة الملحة لتوسيع نطاق إتاحة العلاجات اللازمة بتكلفة معقولة ونوعية جيدة.

وقال تيدروس أدهانوم غيبريسييوس المدير العام لمنظمة الصحة العالمية، في تقرير جديد إن “شخصا من كل ستة أشخاص في العالم يعجز عن إنجاب طفل خلال مرحلة من حياته، بغض النظر عن المنطقة التي يقطنها أو الموارد المتاحة له”.

وأضاف غيبريسييوس أن “التقرير، وهو الأول من نوعه الذي يصدر منذ عشر سنوات، كشف عن واقع مهم يتمثل في أن العقم لا يميز بين البشر”.. مؤكدا أن العقم يؤثر على ملايين الأشخاص، لكن رغم ذلك لم تتناوله دراسات كافية، فيما تواجه العلاجات اللازمة له نقصا في التمويل وهي غير متاحة لكثيرين بسبب تكاليفها المرتفعة”.

ولم يشر التقرير إلى الأسباب الطبية أو البيئية الكامنة وراء العقم، أو كيف تطورت هذه المشكلة الصحية بمرور الزمن، إلا أنه أشار إلى مدى انتشاره من خلال تحليل مجموع الدراسات التي تناولته بين عامي 1990 و2021 ، وأظهر التقرير أن العقم يؤثر على قسم كبير من سكان العالم .

وأكدت منظمة الصحة العالمية أن هذا الوضع يمثل مشكلة صحية كبيرة، تطال 17,8 بالمئة من السكان البالغين في الدول الغنية و16,5 بالمئة من سكان البلدان ذات المداخيل المنخفضة أو المتوسطة.
