Qatar’s Permanent Representative to UN Says Women’s Empowerment, Gender Equality Key to Sustainable Development

Doha: HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani affirmed Wednesday that women’s empowerment and gender equality are the key to sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty and progress towards social and human development.

Speaking at the celebration of International Women’s Day, which was held on the sidelines of the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha, Her Excellency said that the Doha Program of Action (DPoA) (2022-2031) set a number of goals and objectives for gender equality and the empowerment of women. It also considered that one of the ultimate priorities is to use the power of science, technology and new ideas to combat vulnerability and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Her Excellency added, stressing the importance of commitment to improving women’s education, digital capacity and skills in a bid to bring about change and progress that will help achieve the SDGs.

Her Excellency said that the world marks this year’s International Women’s Day under a very important title: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’, with technology opening new doors for the global empowerment of women and girls, and the digital age offering an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate all forms of disparity and inequality. Although there are many crises around the world, the world has an opportunity to create a better future not only for women and girls, but for all, but it needs to focus on bridging the gap between men and women, technology, innovation and science to reach gender equality, Her Excellency added.

Her Excellency added that there are three billion people without Internet connection, mostly women and girls in developing countries. In LDCs, there are only 19 percent of women who have access to the Internet, Her Excellency said, pointing out that Qatar will do everything in its power to support the achievement of this goal, calling for all UN Member States and stakeholders to join the State of Qatar and contribute to bridging the digital gap.

In the same context, HE Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, Rabab Fatima, said that the empowerment of women and girls is an essential element of the DPoA and a theme that has continued throughout the work of the LDC5, particularly with regard to education and digital skills.

HE Rabab Fatima expressed her happiness at marking International Women’s Day in Doha, and voicing hopes for women leaders participating in the LDC5 to have inspired the attendees, especially young women, to bring about real changes in their countries and in their lives. Her Excellency expressed her admiration for the women speaking at the LDC5, and the confidence and persuasion they possess and how they seized the opportunity to lead, shape and influence the debate.

HE Rabab Fatima stressed the need for access to education to be the greatest empowerment tool available to humanity, and for this access to be equal and comprehensive, noting that the world still has a long way to go to achieve this equality in all aspects of life. The world will be able to make this achievement through strong commitment and determination, Her Excellency said.

Empowering women enables an entire nation to fulfill its potential, and together the world must do more to open classrooms, boardrooms, and staff rooms to women and girls in all LDCs and everywhere, Her Excellency said, calling for new pledges to create a world in which all women and girls have an equal voice and access to every opportunity and be equal partners in the journey from LDCs to prosperity.

International Women’s Day is annually marked on March 8 to think about strategies and promote the steps that have been taken and are being taken by the international community to ensure a world of gender equality, free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination – a diverse, equitable and inclusive world in which differences are valued.

الدوحة: أكدت سعادة الشيخة علياء أحمد بن سيف آل ثاني المندوب الدائم لدولة قطر لدى الأمم المتحدة، أن تمكين المرأة والمساواة بين الجنسين هما مفتاح التنمية المستدامة والجهود المبذولة للقضاء على الفقر والتقدم المحرز نحو التنمية الاجتماعية والبشرية.

وأضافت سعادتها، خلال الاحتفال باليوم العالمي للمرأة الذي أقيم على هامش مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة الخامس المعني بأقل البلدان نموا الذي يقام حاليا بالدوحة، أن برنامج عمل الدوحة /2022 – 2031/ حدد عددا من الأهداف والغايات للمساواة بين الجنسين وتمكين المرأة، واعتبر أيضا أن إحدى الأولويات القصوى هي استخدام قوة العلم والتكنولوجيا والأفكار الجديدة لمحاربة الضعف وتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة، مشددة على أهمية الالتزام بتحسين تعليم المرأة وقدرتها ومهاراتها الرقمية؛ من أجل إحداث التغيير والتقدم الذي سيساعد في الوصول إلى أهداف التنمية المستدامة.

وأوضحت أن العالم يحتفل باليوم العالمي للمرأة هذا العام تحت عنوان مهم للغاية “الابتكار والتكنولوجيا من أجل المساواة بين الجنسين”، حيث تفتح التكنولوجيا أبوابا جديدة للتمكين العالمي للنساء والفتيات، ويقدم العصر الرقمي فرصة غير مسبوقة للقضاء على جميع أشكال التفاوت وعدم المساواة، منوهة إلى أنه رغم وجود الكثير من الأزمات حول العالم، فإن العالم لديه فرصة لصنع مستقبل أفضل ليس فقط للنساء والفتيات، ولكن للجميع، غير أنه بحاجة إلى التركيز على سد الفجوة بين الرجال والنساء والتكنولوجيا والابتكار والعلوم، وإذا لم نفعل ذلك، سيكون من الصعب الوصول إلى المساواة بين الجنسين.

وأوضحت سعادتها أن هناك 3 مليارات شخص لا يزالون غير مرتبطين بالإنترنت، غالبيتهم من النساء والفتيات في البلدان النامية، وفي البلدان الأقل نموا هناك فقط 19 بالمئة من النساء يمكنهم الوصول للإنترنت، لافتة إلى أن قطر ستقوم بكل ما في وسعها لدعم تحقيق هذا الهدف، وداعية في الوقت نفسه جميع الدول الأعضاء، وأصحاب المصلحة للانضمام لدولة قطر، والمساهمة في سد الفجوة الرقمية.

وفي الإطار ذاته، قالت سعادة السيدة رباب فاطمة وكيلة الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة والممثلة السامية لأقل البلدان نموا والبلدان النامية غير الساحلية والدول الجزرية الصغيرة النامية: إن تمكين النساء والفتيات عنصر أساسي في برنامج عمل الدوحة، وهو موضوع استمر في جميع أعمال مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة الخامس المعني بأقل البلدان نموا، خاصة فيما يتعلق بالتعليم والمهارات الرقمية.

وأعربت عن سعادتها للاحتفال باليوم العالمي للمرأة في الدوحة، وعن أملها أن تكون القيادات النسائية المشاركة في المؤتمر قد ألهمت الحضور، وخاصة الشابات، لإحداث تغييرات حقيقية في بلدانهن وفي حياتهن، مبدية إعجابها بالنساء المتحدثات في المؤتمر، وما يتمتعن به من ثقة وقدرة على الاقناع، وكيف أنهن انتهزن الفرصة لقيادة النقاش وتشكيله والتأثير فيه.

وشددت سعادة السيدة رباب فاطمة على ضرورة أن يكون الوصول إلى التعليم أعظم أداة تمكين متاحة للبشرية، وأن يكون هذا الوصول متساويا وشاملا، مشيرة إلى أن العالم لا يزال أمامه طريق طويل لتحقيق هذه المساواة في جميع مناحي الحياة، “لكنني على ثقة من أننا سنكون قادرين على تحقيق هذا الإنجاز من خلال التزامنا القوي وتصميمنا”.

وتابعت بالقول: “إن تمكين المرأة يمكن أمة بأكملها من تحقيق إمكاناتها، ويجب علينا معا أن نقوم بالمزيد لفتح أبواب الفصول الدراسية وغرف مجالس الإدارة، وغرف الموظفين أمام النساء والفتيات في جميع البلدان الأقل نموا وفي كل مكان. دعونا نتعهد هنا اليوم بإيجاد عالم تتمتع فيه جميع النساء والفتيات بصوت متساو وإمكانية وصول إلى كل فرصة، دعونا نتأكد من أن النساء كذلك شركاء متساوون في رحلة التحول من فئة البلدان الأقل نموا إلى الازدهار والارتقاء”.

ويحتفل العالم في الثامن من مارس من كل عام باليوم العالمي للمرأة، للتوقف والتفكير لوضع الاستراتيجيات، وتعزيز الخطوات التي اتخذت ويتخذها المجتمع الدولي لضمان عالم به مساواة بين الجنسين، وخال من الانحياز والنمطية والتمييز، ومتنوع ومنصف وشامل وتقدر فيه الاختلافات.
