Microsoft Joins Qatar Internet Exchange Point

Doha: Microsoft became a member of Qatar Internet Exchange Point (QIXP), along with a group of service providers, academic institutions, and other local entities.

QIXP is a non-profit carrier-neutral Internet Exchange Point established for the development of the internet and digital ecosystem in the State of Qatar. It functions as a meeting point that enables internet service providers, digital content service providers, educational institutes, and government and private entities to exchange internet traffic within the State of Qatar instead of exchanging local data and information outside the country.

“We are pleased that Microsoft joined the QIXP, which will benefit all members, as a lot of traffic to Microsoft will be localized for easy access, thereby improving the overall quality of the internet and ensuring faster and safer access to hosted digital content,” said Ali Al Suwaidi, Technical Affairs Department Director, Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) and QIXP Steering Committee Chairman.

“QIXP contributes to providing a world-class infrastructural and informatics backbone, developing the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, and building a knowledge-based economy that contributes to diversifying the national economy, which supports Qatar National Second Development Strategy 2018-2022 and Qatar National Vision 2030 goals. QIXP is in the process of onboarding some of the leading entities from government and private sectors to connect and be members of QIXP. The QIXP Steering Committee is currently working to revamp the IXP infrastructure to geographically located multiple datacentres and other expansion plans that will further attract local and international digital content service providers,” he added.

The QIXP Steering Committee was established by Cabinet Decision No. (24) of 2018. It aims to benefit from the infrastructure available in the country through which internet service providers’ systems work, in addition to the content delivery network by exchanging the internet traffic.

الدوحة: انضمت شركة مايكروسوفت لعضوية مشروع نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت/QIXP/، لتلحق بمجموعة من الجهات التي تمثل مقدمي الخدمات، ومؤسسات أكاديمية وجهات محلية أخرى في هذا المشروع.

وقال السيد علي السويدي، مدير إدارة الشؤون الفنية بهيئة تنظيم الاتصالات ورئيس لجنة تسيير مشروع نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت، إن انضمام شركة مايكروسوفت إلى المشروع سيكون مفيدا لجميع الأطراف، مبيناً أنه سيتم توطين الكثير من حركة مرور البيانات إلى شركة مايكروسوفت ليسهل الوصول إليها، مما سيسهم في تحسين جودة الإنترنت بصورة عامة وضمان الوصول إلى المحتوى الرقمي المُستضاف بشكل أسرع وأكثر أماناً.

وأضاف أن نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت ستساهم في توفير بنية تحتية مادية ومعلوماتية متطورة، وفي تطوير قطاع الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات، وبناء اقتصاد قائم على المعرفة يساهم في تنويع الاقتصاد المحلي، مما يدعم رؤية قطر الوطنية 2030 واستراتيجيتها للتنمية الوطنية.. مشيرا إلى أن مشروع /نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت/ يتعاون حاليا مع بعض الجهات الرائدة في القطاعين الحكومي والخاص للانضمام لعضويته، كما تعمل لجنة تسيير المشروع على تجديد البنية التحتية لنقطة تبادل الإنترنت لتشمل مراكز بيانات في مواقع جغرافية متعددة، ولديها خطط توسع أخرى من شأنها استقطاب المزيد من مقدمي خدمات المحتوى الرقمي على الصعيد المحلي والدولي.

ومن جانبها، قالت السيدة لانا خلف، المدير العام لمايكروسوفت قطر، إن الشركة تسعى لتوفير خدمات سحابية آمنة وموثوقة تتلاءم مع القوانين والمعايير الوطنية لأمن البيانات وخصوصيتها.

وأضافت أن عضوية مايكروسوفت في مشروع نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت /QIXP/ تأتي ضمن هذه الجهود، وعقب إطلاق الشركة لأول منطقة مراكز بيانات سحابية في قطر والتي ستمكّن جميع المؤسسات من إعادة ابتكار قطاعات أعمالها من خلال خدمات سحابية عالمية وإمكانية تخزين البيانات محليًا في دولة قطر.

يشار إلى أن /نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت/ مشروع غير ربحي محايد، تم إنشاؤه لتطوير الإنترنت والنظام الإيكولوجي الرقمي في دولة قطر، كما يعمل ليكون نقطة التقاء تُمكّن مقدمي خدمات الإنترنت ومقدمي خدمات المحتوى الرقمي والمؤسسات التعليمية والجهات الحكومية والخاصة من تبادل حركة الإنترنت داخل قطر، بدلاً من تبادل البيانات والمعلومات المحلية خارج الدولة.

وأنشئت لجنة تسيير مشروع نقطة قطر لتبادل الإنترنت بموجب قرار مجلس الوزراء رقم (24) لسنة 2018، وتهدف اللجنة للاستفادة من البنية التحتية المتاحة في الدولة والتي تقوم من خلالها أنظمة مقدمي خدمات الإنترنت وشبكة توصيل المحتوى بتبادل حركة الإنترنت.
