Workers’ Group Hails Qatar’s Hosting of 2023 UN Conference on Least Developed Countries

Geneva: The Workers’ Group welcomed, in the 110th session of the International Labor Conference currently held in Geneva, the State of Qatar’s hosting of the 2023 UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, stressing that this creates a timely opportunity to shape more effective global support.

In a statement, Chairperson of the Workers’ Group Catelene Passchier said, “With Qatar being elected to the position of one of the Vice-Presidents of our Conference this year, we hope that the conclusions of this week’s discussion will inspire the Doha Conference agenda for 2023 on key social and labor issues.”

“Around 60 armed conflicts are costing millions of lives. The war in Ukraine, in addition to being a humanitarian disaster and a threat to the multilateral system, is disrupting supply chains and further pushing up prices while wages and social benefits are not following,” she added.

“The pandemic has destroyed 255 million jobs,” she pointed out. “We now have the terrifying prospect of 860 million people living in extreme poverty by the end of this year, 250 million more than last year; and around 827 million people are expected to be malnourished in 2022.” “At national level, we have a moral duty and a legal obligation to protect the human, social and economic rights of those who are hit the hardest and those who are most vulnerable,” Passchier stated.
“A human catastrophe is imminent if we do not act decisively,” she warned.

Chairperson of the Workers’ Group called for concrete work to create decent and environmentally friendly jobs for millions of unemployed people around the world, underscoring the need for a strong and comprehensive multilateral system based on strengthening development cooperation in line with the sustainable development goals.

وأضافت مجموعة العمل في الكلمة التي ألقتها السيدة كاتلين باسشير رئيس المجموعة “أنه مع انتخاب دولة قطر كأحد نواب رئيس مؤتمر العمل الدولي هذا العام، نأمل أن تلهم نتائج المناقشة هذا الأسبوع، جدول أعمال مؤتمر الدوحة لعام 2023 بشأن القضايا الاجتماعية والعمالية الرئيسية”.

وأشارت السيدة باسشير إلى التحديات التي تواجه الملايين بسبب الحروب والصراعات.. وقالت “إن 60 صراعا مسلحا حول العالم أودى بحياة الملايين، بالإضافة إلى كون الحرب في أوكرانيا كارثة إنسانية وتهديدًا للنظام متعدد الأطراف، فإنها تعطل سلاسل التوريد وتزيد من ارتفاع الأسعار بينما الأجور والمزايا الاجتماعية لا تتماشى مع هذا الارتفاع”.

كما أشارت إلى أن جائحة كورونا دمرت نحو 255 مليون وظيفة، مع احتمالية أن يعيش 860 مليون شخص في فقر مدقع بنهاية هذا العام، بزيادة قدرها 250 مليون عن العام الماضي.. كما توقعت أن يعاني حوالي 827 مليون شخص من سوء التغذية في العام ذاته.

وأكدت أن هذا الوضع يفرض، على المستويات الوطنية، واجبات أخلاقية والتزامات قانونية لحماية الحقوق الإنسانية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية لمن هم أكثر تضررا وأولئك الأكثر ضعفا.. محذرة من أن كارثة بشرية وشيكة إذا لم نتصرف بشكل حاسم.

وطالبت بالعمل الجاد لخلق وظائف لائقة وصديقة للبيئة لملايين العاطلين حول العالم، كما شددت على الحاجة إلى نظام متعدد الأطراف وقوي وشامل يقوم على تعزيز التعاون الإنمائي وبما يتماشى مع أهداف التنمية المستدامة.
