US Secretary of State Highlights Strength of Qatari-American Ties

Washington: HE US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hailed Saturday the strength of ties between the US and the State of Qatar, expressing his confidence that they are set to grow further over the coming years.
Blinken made a statement to mark the 50-year anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between the US and Qatar.
“Fifty years ago, United States Ambassador William Stoltzfus presented his credentials to the government of Qatar, initiating the diplomatic relationship between our two countries. In the time since, that relationship has steadily grown stronger, spanning shared security and economic interests, cooperation on regional challenges, and deepening ties between our people,” he said.
“Qatar has generously hosted US forces at Al Udeid Air Base since 1996, where Qataris and Americans continue to train together; provided aid to Americans after hurricanes Katerina and Harvey, and so much more,” he added.
He highlighted the strong economic ties the two sides enjoy, which exceeds $200 billion in trade and investments, in addition to strong educational ties with six American universities opening campuses in Qatar’s Education City.
“Today, our countries work side by side on regional challenges like countering ISIS and working to improve the lives of the Palestinian people; and global challenges, like tackling COVID-19 and the climate crisis,” he said.
The US Secretary of State highlighted how the events in Afghanistan have played a major role in reinforcing the two countries’ partnership.
“Qatar played an indispensable role in the transit of more than 70,000 Americans, legal permanent residents, and Afghans to the United States,” he said.
Blinken also said that the two sides continue to work together to address the humanitarian needs of people in Afghanistan.
He stressed that the past 50 years saw the two countries partnership help Qataris, Americans, and other people lead a prosperous and safer life, expressing his confidence that bilateral ties will grow even stronger in the coming years.
“We were pleased to recognize this exemplary cooperation and deepen it, by designating Qatar as a Major Non-NATO Ally earlier in the year,” Blinken said.

واشنطن: أكد السيد أنتوني بلينكن وزير الخارجية الأمريكي، اليوم، على متانة وصلابة العلاقة والشراكة التي تربط بين دولة قطر والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، معبرا عن ثقته في أن العلاقات ستنمو على نحو أكثر قوة في السنوات القادمة.
وقال بلينكن، في مقطع مصور نشره على موقع /تويتر/ بمناسبة الذكرى الخمسين على تأسيس العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين قطر والولايات المتحدة: “قبل 50 عاما من الآن، قدم السفير الأمريكي وليام ستولتزفوس أوراق اعتماده لدى حكومة دولة قطر، مستهلا بذلك العلاقات الدبلوماسية بين البلدين. ومنذ ذلك الحين، نمت العلاقات بين بلدينا بقوة وبوتيرة مطردة، لتمتد إلى المصالح الأمنية والاقتصادية المشتركة، والتعاون حول التحديات الإقليمية، وتعميق العلاقات بين شعبي البلدين”.
وأضاف “لقد استضافت دولة قطر بسخاء القوات الأمريكية في قاعدة العديد الجوية منذ 1996، حيث واصلت القوات القطرية والأمريكية التدرب سويا، كما وفرت قطر المساعدة للأمريكيين بعد إعصاري /كاترينا/ و /هارفي/، وأكثر من ذلك بكثير”.
وتابع “لقد بنينا من خلال شراكتنا علاقات اقتصادية عميقة، تجاوز حجمها 200 مليار دولار في التجارة والاستثمار، فضلا عن علاقات طيبة في مجال التعليم، حيث قامت 6 جامعات أمريكية بفتح فروع لها في المدينة التعليمية بدولة قطر”.
وأردف “اليوم، بلدانا يعملان جنبا إلى جنبا على التحديات الإقليمية، مثل التصدي لتنظيم /داعش/، والعمل على تحسين حياة الشعب الفلسطيني، إضافة إلى تحديات عالمية أخرى، مثل مكافحة فيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/، والأزمات المناخية”.
وأكد وزير الخارجية الأمريكي أن الأحداث التي شهدتها أفغانستان في الأشهر الأخيرة ساهمت في تعزيز وتقوية الشراكة الأمريكية – القطرية، موضحا أن “قطر لعبت دورا حيويا لا غنى عنه في نقل أكثر من 70 ألف مواطن أمريكي ومقيمين دائمين شرعيين ومواطنين أفغان، إلى الولايات المتحدة”.
وأشار السيد بلينكن إلى أن قطر والولايات المتحدة تعملان معا على “معالجة احتياجات إنسانية هائلة للشعب في أفغانستان”.
وتابع بالقول “لقد عبرنا عن تقديرنا لهذا التعاون النموذجي من خلال تصنيف دولة قطر حليف رئيسي للولايات المتحدة من خارج حلف شمال الأطلسي /الناتو/ في وقت سابق من العام الجاري. وكما قال الرئيس جو بايدن، لقد كانت تلك خطوة طال انتظارها”.
وأكد وزير الخارجية الأمريكي أنه على مدار الخمسين عاما الماضية، ساهمت العلاقة بين الولايات المتحدة وقطر في جعل “حياة القطريين والأمريكيين، وآخرين كثيرين، أكثر أمنا وازدهارا”.. معبرا عن ثقته في أن العلاقة بين البلدين ستنمو على نحو أكثر قوة وصلابة في السنوات القادمة.
