US approves possible sale of Patriot missiles to Turkey

The U.S. State Department has approved a possible foreign military sale of the Patriot air and missile defense system to Turkey for an estimated total of $3.5 billion, the Pentagon said on Dec. 18.
According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the department approved the sale of 80 Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missiles (GEM-T) missiles, 60 PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles and associated equipment.
The agency notified Congress of the possible sale.
The sale includes radar sets, engagement control stations, launching stations, communications equipment, tools and test equipment, range and test programs and support equipment.
“The proposed sale will increase the defensive capabilities of the Turkey military to guard against hostile aggression and shield NATO Allies who might train and operate within Turkey’s borders. Turkey should have no difficulty absorbing this system into its armed forces,” said the agency.
Turkey had been trying to purchase the air defense system from the U.S., but the missiles have never been sold to Turkey when they were needed the most, according to the government.
The move comes after Turkey signed a contract with Russia to buy the S-400 air defense system in 2017. Installation of the S-400 system in Turkey is expected to begin in October 2019.
Washington has complained that the Russian system is not compatible with weapons used by other NATO countries.
Separately, in a report in late November, the Pentagon warned that purchasing the S-400 system would have unavoidable negative consequences for U.S.-Turkey relations as well as Turkey’s role in NATO.
Patriot missiles are used for defense purposes, mainly to shoot down incoming missiles and planes.
وافقت وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية، اليوم على صفقة لبيع تركيا منظومة باتريوت للدفاع الجوي والصاروخي، بقيمة 3.5 مليار دولار.
وأوضح بيان صادر عن وكالة التعاون الأمني الدفاعي، التابعة لوزارة الدفاع الأمريكية “البنتاغون”، أن وزارة الخارجية قررت الموافقة على بيع صواريخ باتريوت PAC-3 والتجهيزات الخاصة بها إلى تركيا، بقيمة تقديرية تبلغ 3.5 مليار دولار.
وأضاف البيان أن الوكالة أبلغت الكونغرس اليوم بأمر الصفقة ، مشيرا إلى أن الموافقة على الصفقة ستمنح الدفاع الجوي التركي مرونة كبيرة.
ونقلت وكالة الأنباء التركية “الأناضول” عن مسؤول، فضل عدم ذكر اسمه، قوله ” إن الصفقة ستسهم في تحقيق الأمن القومي وتطبيق السياسة الخارجية للولايات المتحدة”.
وأشار إلى أن تركيا سوف تستخدم منظومة باتريوت من أجل تطوير قدراتها الدفاعية الجوية والصاروخية، وحماية وحدة أراضيها، والحيلولة دون التهديدات الإقليمية، وأن الصفقة المقترحة ستزيد من القدرات الدفاعية الرامية إلى حماية الجيش التركي من الهجمات المعادية، وحلفاء الناتو الموجودين على الأراضي التركية.
وكانت أنقرة قد طلبت من واشنطن الموافقة على تزويدها بـ 20 منصة إطلاق و80 صاروخا اعتراضيا تابعة لمنظومة باتريوت.
ويأتي قرار الخارجية الأمريكية هذا في الوقت الذي تشهد فيه العلاقات التركية الأمريكية توترا حول العديد من القضايا.
